First, let me say I'm not at all a fan NASCAR. I enjoy a liitle open wheel racing, but I never saw the point of watching a bunch of left hand turns in the same car I have in my driveway driven by some guys from North Carolina. (With apologies to my man Juice).
But I digress. Now that I've probably offended half the guys on here, let me make my point.
What's the deal today with the race today in Talladega that was 499 miles? It's the Indy 500, the Daytona 500. It's kind of like a ROB that's starts sucking you off but then stops just at the point no return.

To each their own, but Talladega is one of the legendary tracks where the boys and gals do their thing. I've grown to enjoy the sport, and I agree, that watching everyone continually doing the left hand turns could be boring, but the race is so much more than that. I've enjoyed 3 races in the stands in the last few years and Talladega is Talladega !! 499, you wonder, why only 499. IMO, it's a marketing thing to be different. Who knows. If I get the opportunity, I'll do a few laps on the track on the non-race days. It's an awesome track, try driving on a road where the right side of your car is about 2 feet higher than the left side. LOL

It's a stupid marketing gimmick. The race is 188 laps on a 2.66 mile track same as the 2nd Talladega which is the "Talladega 500" (500.08 miles).
This one is sponsered by Aaron's so like everything they rent it's only x99 instead of the full 100.

carl has it correct. This "499" was actually 516.04 miles as they ran extra laps for what is known as a green-white-checkered finish. Keeps a race from ending under a caution flag.
