Thanks Dugster. If these are the prices that we would have to pay if prostitution were lealized everywhere in the U.S., then I would prefer that things just stay the way they are. [view link]

I'm thinking legalization would bring more competition and turn prostitution into a commodity, rather the black market thing it is now. Nevada's prostitutes are overpriced because they are a novelty. I could be wrong about that, but I dint think so.

Prices typically are determined by Supply & Demand. NO demand usually equates with lower cost.

Legalize it, tax it, just like any other commodity. Keep streetwalking illegal. I'd even say increase the fines/jailtime for streetwalkers and johns who buy them. If you're going to legalize prostitution, keep it in the brothels and regulate it. Same with drugs (if we ever get to that point.) I'd for one like to see it out of the strip clubs. I do think the legalization of prostitution would definitely put a damper on strip club activity -- why pay to be cockteased when you can go buy the real thing legally? -- but it might not. It would be interesting to see what would happen when/if such a controversial commodity is legalized.

If they do legalize it, I'm sure the brothels will be in high money places like L.A, N.Y., Vegas...... Can't see one springing up in the hood where a ton of dudes show up trying to bicker down the price to $100.

"All whores are lying, thieving strippers" and vice versa... "It would be interesting to see what would happen when/if such a controversial commodity is legalized." Check out the movie Idiocracy, a comedy about a dystopian future where you can get something “extra” with your latte at Starbucks. Joe: Man, I could really go for a Starbucks, y'know? Frito: I don't really think we have time for a handjob, Joe. [view link]

@shadow: the price I quoted ($1000/hr $500/half hour) were where negotiations start. You have to play hardball but it they will come down from there. A subject of a future review...

I'm with gmd, that if it were legalized everywhere the price would come down. Right now there is a huge degree of articial supply restriction. Some of leading mongers suggest that up to 25% of civilian girls are willing to do p4p if you ask, so I think there is oddles of potential supply just being held back by the laws. (And for dummies (like mikeya02) with poor reading/logic skills I'm don't saying 25% would do it full or even part time professionally as opposed to a one off, but I think there is plenty who would if it were legal, and especially if the social stigma lessened. The hip-hopification, IME, is already making the younger generation more and more willing every year. A representative comment I heard "I probably would if the price the was right and I needed the money. It's just sex!")

Legalize marijuana if we're fixing stupid laws.

I think a good benchmark of the effects of legalization of prostitution in the US is Canada. In Canada the specific act of paying somebody for sex is legal. What in practice is illegal is operating a bawdy house, public communication regarding prostitution, and living off of the prostitution of another. So supposedly an independent outlall call girl who makes no sex-for-money claims in her advertizing is OK. The gray areas in the current law is whether the bawdy house rule prohibits escorts form offering individual incall, what at what point can you actually make a specific offer under the communication law, and whether having the call girl hire a driver or body guard constitute living off the prostitution of another. In general though in Canada call girls are pelntifull, call girl prices are way less than the prices quoted in Nevada brothels, streetwalkers are comparatively rare, and human trafficing and child prostitution levels are not elevated. Strip Clubs still exis, but n general they do not offer ultra high mileage.

If prostitution was legal in the U.S. prices would quickly match Canada's. Proof of this is Rhode Island. Until they closed the loophole and outlawing prostitution in late 2009, prostitution was not illegal in Rhode Island, and prices and quality of women was very comparable to the $180 to $200 rate you find in Montreal. Further proof is Las Vegas where except for the occasional stings you hear about, which are more about catching rip off artists than trying to stop prostitution, prostitution in Vegas is pretty well tolerated, and while there are of course quite a few escorts that offer outrageous prices, prices for the most part are fairly reasonable, and compared to the Brothels even the outrageous prices are low. Based off a 2008 visit to the two closest brothels to Vegas, a typical legal prostitute seems think she deserves at least $1000 an hour. Why anyone would visit one of the legal brothels is beyond me, especially since the looks of the woman I saw who wanted $1000 didn't even come close to matching the looks of escorts who advertise in Vegas around $200 to $300, let alone the hookers I saw frequenting the casinos. A grand an hour is made even more ludicrous, when many of the porn stars currently escorting in Vegas charge $400 or less.

I admit Dougster is right. The price of girls with family problems, finacial issues, no social skills, are mental, on drugs would go down. And there would be more of them.
