"Conservative politics" should mean central government does only what the constitution says they may. Therefore, conservative politics enhance liberty, while "liberal" politics degrade it. This is also observed repeatedly throughout the world. Perhaps words get so misused as to lose there meaning. It may be simpler and more meaningful to say "I am for strictly limited government" or "I am for big government" than "I am a right-winger" or "I am a left-winger."
