I know animals eat the placenta for nutritional reasons. But I'm not sure about Humans having a taste for it. Like shadowcat,I'll stick to Beef Burgers!
I think cannabalism is off putting everywhere but, "everything is groovy" California. Yes, I know this story comes from New York, but I could easily see the granola crowd building a ritual around it.
If you're talking about "the breaking of the bread", for the Catholics, it's some gluten product and a shot of wine. For the Methodists, it's actual bread and grape juice. For the Espicopalians and Lutherans, it's somewhere in between.
None of these religions offer actual human flesh at their services.
Did the article suggest that anyone but the mother eat the placenta? That would equate to eating one's *own* toenails, which I've heard of a number of people doing.

And what about the ritual symbolic cannibalism practiced by a "major world-wide religion"?

Unlike that, we don't eat each other's toe nail clippings.
