In todays Boston Herald, Brian Riedl of the Heritage Foundation wrote an interesting article in which he points out that 50 million dollars in federal stimulus money helps to pay for mascot costumes, golf carts and how much alcohol college women freshman require before agreeing to casual sex. Another 2.6 milion is being spent on training Chinese prostitutes to drink more responsibly on the job.

Perhaps there will be a tax deduction on picking up women college freshmen and hiring Chinese prostitutes. This is America and you can't make this stuff up.

Check out the 9/20/10 www.bostonherald.com opinion section for the story.

Over here it's the same, foreign aid which props up military based governments is ring fenced but the defence budget is under threat, putting an even bigger strain on our guys in Afghanistan and Iraq. Dimwits.

As if there were actually any hope that wasteful government spending would change. Neither side of the aisle has been willing, irrespective of what they've *said* on the subject, to curtail this type of thing. And even if, on some rare occasion, they do reduce some wasteful program, it's more than made up by an increase somewhere else, or even new spending.

...except that Mr. Riedl fails to provide any at all evidence for these wild claims in his Right-wing opinion piece. I'll never understand why some put so much credence in pure opinion pieces from either side of the political spectrum.

What that opinion piece is really all about is an attempt to defend the indefensible, further tax cuts for the rich in the face of growing concern over the federal debt & deficits, which were recently caused in large part by those same tax cuts! It's not going to work, and neither is the totally false "small businesses will be taxed significantly more" whine from the exact same people.

From that same opinion piece:
"First, soaring spending - not low taxes - is driving the deficit."

Not entirely, but the non-partisan CBO has said clearly that the changes in the FY2009-2012 federal budget deficits are caused by a number of things...mostly the GWB tax cuts (for mostly the rich), GWB's unnecessary Iraq War, GWB's Medicare Part D Program (which was never paid for), the GWB-initiated Wall Street bailouts, and the most recent economic downturn (which was literally the worst since the Great Depression) that was caused mostly by GOP-sponsored deregulation & inaction.

Nice try though...
