Key players in Guam's tourism industry today said they support a bill that would rid Tumon of adult entertainment businesses and establishments.
In a public hearing today at the Legislature, several tourist agencies testified that if Guam is to keep marketing itself as a family destination, the strip clubs and other adult entertainment businesses must relocate from Tumon.
“We all believe that as an industry and a community we must protect Guam's image feverously in order to be competitive, regionally and globally, to sustain and grow Guam's largest economic driver, tourism,†said Gerry Perez, general manager of Guam Visitors Bureau.
Bill 314 moves to define what is an adult entertainment business or establishment. It also urges the Legislature to recognize that such businesses have “adverse effects upon the character of the affected area and adjacent neighborhood.†The bill also asks the Legislature to recognize that having such businesses in close proximity to places visited by minors is a problem.

Well, hold on here. Andersen AFB and a major U.S. Navy base pump a lot of money into Guam. The Prime Minister of Japan just resigned because he did not keep his promise to relocate the U.S. Marines now in Okinawa. The early plan was to move the Marines to Guam. With the troubles in Korea, the Defense Department is considered a major build-up on Guam, including adding an aircraft carrier home port. By 2014 there may be an additional 40,000 U.S. military on Guam with additional civilians in support. And they want to close strip clubs and lose all that money?

I learned all that Guam info while researching possible retirement locales. Guam will never be Disney World, so don't bother trying.

It's true that the U.S. military is going to be building up forces on Guam (mostly because Okinawa doesn't want them anymore), but there's a love/hate relationship with the military on Guam. Sure, they add a lot of commerce to the island, but they also add quite a burden above & beyond this minor issue with "adult entertainment businesses".
