I saw Frank Beard from ZZ Top passed away. That sucks I have a lot good memories seeing those guys a few times and driving around America to their songs, especially in Texas but it got me thinking I personally think "Rough Boy" by ZZ Top is the best Power Ballad out there IMO. I fucking love that song, man.

Another one Def Leppard Love Bites, great stuff there.

What are some of yours? I think a lot people don't like Foreigner's "I wanna know what love is" and I kind of agree with them.

Nah, Rough Boy is too understated and classy. A true Rock Power Ballad is cringe-worthy but a guilty pleasure. Adam Carolla calls them “tool tunes”. Oh, you’ll blast them on your car radio when they come on, but your windows are roiled up cause you ain’t proud of playing them.

That said, Home Sweet Home, Motley Crew, is the ultimate.

OT-several entertainers seem to be passing lately. Just saw where Dolly Parton passed. Although far from rough, who could forget her?

I think this qualifies as a power ballad - Chicago's "Searchin' So Long." When playing it in the car, I crank up the volume, drop the top, and don't care who else hears it.

^ Never heard Searchin So Long before. Just listened to it. Yikes. Begins like a Carpenter’s song then turns into a bad acid trip. Keep you windows rolled up.

@Studme53 Lol - I never heard it described that way. But then again, I've never heard a reaction from anyone experiencing it for the first time. That song's an anthem, written back in the day when Chicago had serious cajones. I've been listening since the beginning - 50+ years ago. Fuuuuuuck...

Two come to mind:

  1. Alone - Heart
  2. The Flame - Cheap Trick

@Rod84- Chicago's version of "I'm a Man" would be the kind of song I'd crank up and leave the windows open for.

It's either Alone, or I want to know what love is by Foreigner, or GNR's November Rain.

My older brother played guitar in an 8 piece wedding band with horns/brass back in the 70s. They practiced in our basement one night and almost blew the roof off our little ram shackle house when they played Chicago’s 25 or 6 to 4. I loved that song ever since.
