Strip Clubs in Tokyo

In movies strip clubs you always see well choreagraphed dance numbers with flashy costumes and really involved audiences. Go to a normal SC and that will not be your experience. Instead you’ll see a bland routine and frequently dancers so bored they sometimes watch one of the TVs while they “dance”. But good choreography and costumes is what you’ll find in Tokyo. The clubs in Tokyo are less strip clubs and more strip theaters. Your reaction will be based completely on how much you prefer that. Do you like chatting with girls and getting lap dances or do you like just watching? I prefer watching at this point and hate the constant pressure to buy over priced dances or drinks so I loved Tokyo. The theaters will have 6 girls on the docket and cycle through them. The first dance is non-nude, usually in some kind of traditional Japanese garb. Then the girls will go through a few more costumes, which are all nice and expensive looking. There is a small central stage that juts out into the crowd and sometimes spins. For at least one song the girls don’t dance as much as pose so the rotating stage lets everyone get a nice look. Like a strip yoga. The girls are always 100% into their dances and interact a lot with the crowd-waving, winking, shaking hands, etc. The audience replies with a lot of clapping and is always focused 100% focused on her which has got to be nice for their ego. Must be nice to have a crowd of dudes clap for your private parts. She's less like an object in the background and more like a goddess being worshipped. The routines are usually either demure Japanese traditional or some kind of anime pixie dream girl. After her act the girl comes out and dudes can buy photos for 500 yen (5 bucks) which dudes line up for. It’s a combo of retarded male sexuality and impossible standards of femininity. So basically Japan. Many of the guys will ask for non-nude pictures (because I assume they have so many at this point the costume is more novel than a girl). After the photos they do a bottomless victory lap and make sure everyone gets a few long last looks. Sometimes they’ll tell a few jokes before they leave and I wish I could understand them. If you don’t speak Japanese you will still be fine. The cover charge is typically 5000 yen (50 bucks) which may sound steep but you can stay as long as you want. There are vending machines with only slightly marked up drinks, but most guys just bring their own stuff. Some guys bring grocery bags full of refreshments. Spend 5 hours in a strip club and only spend 50 to 60 bucks? Can’t beat that in the US. I am going to write reviews of the clubs I went to while I was there. I was only there a few weeks so I didn't get to see as many as I would have liked.

Japanese strip theaters do not operate like strip clubs; that's why they're called (in bilingual English signage) "strip theaters". Theirs is more of a burlesque model, and the closest U.S. equivalent might be Las Vegas shows like "Fantasy" (Luxor) or "X Rocks" (Bally's). There's no pole on stage, no circulating among the audience selling private dances, and the venues are set up with theater seating -- no tables or booths. I have been to three such venues (Asukusa Rockza and Shibuya Strip Live Theater in Tokyo in 2017, and Toyo Show in Osaka in 2018), and I can corroborate 669's account. The routines are individual and creative, the performers are skilled and enthusiastic, and the audiences are polite and quiet (and generally older men). Two hours with five to eight performers can be draining, hence the associated bar (I'm a non-drinker, so I didn't test that feature). Both the Tokyo theaters charge 5000 JPY, but Toyo Show is 3000 JPY. All three locations are accustomed to foreign tourists -- the staff may not speak English, but the necessary information is posted in several languages (in addition to English, Strip Live has Russian, and Toyo Show has Korean). Toyo Show simplifies the transaction by using a ticket vending machine (as at ramen places); you buy a ticket, then turn and hand it to the front desk. [view link] [view link] [view link]
