This is a long ass post so I'll chop it up so that questions pertaining to specific sections won't get buried in unrelated comments.
With the Mexican Peso taking repeated hits over the last year from declining oil prices and fears of a Trump presidency, a group of TUSCLers along with myself opted to test out the Dollar's spending power in TJ over the last weekend. I will be posting reviews of all of the places we hit up in the individual clubs' sections. Read on for an overview of my opinions on vising TJ last weekend.
Should Trump happen to claim the US presidency, some fiscal analysts have estimated that the Peso could further slip another 30% or so. The exchange rate currently sits at about 18.5 Pesos to the dollar. A 30% drop would put it in the neighborhood of 24 Pesos to the dollar. The exchange rate when we visited adult Disneyland last weekend was around 19 Pesos to the dollar. To put this into perspective, the exchange rate was closer to 12 Pesos to the dollar last year. So you can buy far more food, booze, and sexy-times when going down to TJ with the same amount of money when compared to last year. This was the impetus for our trip.
There are numerous guides for first time mongers to help navigate San Diego International Airport down to America Plaza to the blue line down to San Ysidro across the border then hop a cab to Zona Norte. The wealth of information largely has not changed. The only thing to keep in mind is that the border crossing back stateside is currently split between a new PedWest station serving 6 lanes and the old crossing temporarily routed through an old building next to where the old crossing used to be.
Should you choose to utilize the PedWest crossing, you will need to take an 8 minute walk eastward to get back to where the blue line trolley heads back into San Diego. There are shuttles, cabs, and some buses where PedWest emerges into the US, but it's currently not as convenient as the old crossing. Most have reported that foot crossings back via PedWest is significantly faster though.
The PedWest crossing will be available for the next couple of years as both US and Mexican authorities build a new facility to process foot traffic where the old border crossing used to stand. For now, PedWest can only be used to cross back into the US. Mexican authorities claim that PedWest lanes heading into Mexico will open this December.
A big focus of this article should be on the current [highly favorable] exchange rate. Girls in Hong Kong (HK) used to want $70100 for a half hour of their time. Most girls this trip were willing to take 8001200 pesos, which would have amounted to roughly $70100 USD last year. At last weekend's exchange rates, this was closer to $4060. Pay in Pesos. This will be a recurring theme in the following posts. Stay tuned.
