I thought thought the word had its origins in American Puritanism, as an acronym placed over the stocks in the village square, standing for Fornication Under Carnal Knowledge. I still find the word an offensive description of the act of sex. (Oh, Fornication is the word to describe sex between unmarried men and women.)
