SLATE - Cheap American Pickup EV Coming Soon

shailynnThey never tell you what you need to know.
Just saw this article. This thing looks pretty cool to me. I like the SUV version and the DIY-vibe to it. So far I am not sure if it will be offered in 4x4 because all I have seen is real wheel drive. American made, plan is to build in Michigan.

last commentTiny vehicle, if I saw this on the road I’d look for a Fisher-Price emblem.

Even as small as it is, it's still probably big enough for what 80% of people in the U.S. "need" a pickup truck to do.

I saw this article, too. It actually makes sense for people who need a truck at a low price. A lot of manufacturing plants, terminals, and refineries will buy this for their maintenance teams. I think there is a market for it, just not the standard auto consumer.

Interesting. I like those new Rivian SUVs too, though this pickup seems less stylish and more practical.

I think people looking for a no frills pickup need something larger, this might be useful as a last mile delivery for small items, but I can’t see most tradesmen being able to haul equipment and tools in a small underpowered vehicle like this one.

I had 2 Ford Rangers when I was married with children and had a big house but now I am not in the market but if I was a 150 mile range wouldn't do it for me.

So reading more on it, it’s a little smaller than a Ford Maverick and they plan a “longer range” model that has 240 mile radius.
For me to consider I would need 300+ mile radius (which would go down to 150 in bad weather conditions) and AWD.
Still, nice option for a vehicle to run around in. Being able to convert from SUV to pickup in under an Hour would be a cool option to have.

it's got my interest...

Maybe good for an uber, amazon delivery, or small business owner making frequent local deliveries. Low entry point and little to no maintenance and operating costs.

@Ronjax2 - apples and oranges. I shopped Rivians a couple of years ago. Look at the price on those and the market segment Slate is marketed to.

To each his own, but I think EVs are fuckin' gay.
They're so lame that Ford is developing a "stick shift" they could offer soon. It will be fake, of course, because there's no transmission. But I guess the idea is that the electrical output of the motor would be broken up into power segments, and to go from one to the next you've got to move the stick. Apparently it adds absolutely nothing to the car's performance; it just provides a different "feeling" to the driver.
Wow, isn't that fuckin' cool man! I wonder if there will be a fake clutch too, that doesn't do anything except release the stick so you can move it. Oh, and fake tailpipes with loudspeakers that sound like exhaust, so you look really, really, cool while driving this thing.

I saw this and was intrigued. I always wanted a pickup. But the charging and range still gives me pause on an
EV. Plus people always want to borrow your pickup

Might be interesting/useful for a few folks. I'm not a huge Ford guy, but I'd take a Maverick or the little Bronco's over that thing all day.
Nothing against electric, it just doesn't meet my needs for a real vehicle at this point. I mean, I guess I could replace the golf cart with it but honestly my golf cart is cheaper, nicer, and more suited to that kind of shit.
