Article and Discussion - The difference?

I want to make sure I know the difference between posting an Article as opposed to a Discussion.

I was reading over some of the articles posted on this site and almost all of them are given a thumbs down for not being posted in a discussion. So I'm getting confused.

I want to make sure to understand what topics qualify to be read as an article. Please be specific.

It's confusing to me, as well.

Founder says, "Articles can be about anything you want, but they should be original and have something to do with the content of this website." Also, the dictionary definition is: "A written composition in prose, usually nonfiction, on a specific topic."

I interpret this to mean that a PL has a specific topic related to Tuscl's purpose, that he'd like to share. It's not necessarily seeking input or guidance. It stands alone as a whole piece of writing generally meant to be of interest and service to PLs everywhere. Plus, they tend to be longer with multiple paragraphs outlining different topical aspects.

Meanwhile, there's no direct Tuscl guidance on Discussions. My opinion - They're less about fleshing out a given topic, and instead seeking input or guidance on some question or subject of interest to the OP. They can be of any length, but tend to be shorter - often no more than a paragraph, or even a one-line question or request.

Articles should be both broader and go into more depth. To me, a discussion is about a more specific topic related to that particular club. There’s a gray area, but that’s what the review/approval system is for.

I am sometimes confused by this as well. I've written discussions that people have said should be articles. And I've written articles that reviewers have downvoted saying they should be discussions. Really, everyone has their own idea on their heads on what merits an article and thus a free month of VIP.

Personally, I think three things separate an article from a discussion.

  • Depth. Articles should be multiple paragraphs and dive deeper into a topic than a discussion would.
  • Clarity. Articles should be well edited.
  • Relevancy. As evidenced by the inane political chatter here, people, even bots, can post discussions about whatever they want - and there's no approval process. Articles should be relevant in some way to the club.

^I would say articles should have less room for debate. And provide information. You can make a thread asking on ways to avoid being ripped off at the strip club. In an article, you need to be providing at least a list of answers.
