last commentI'm back to 1950s/1960 Be Bop, Cool and Modern Jazz. Miles Davis, Dave Brubeck, Thelonious Monk, Benny Carter, Jerry Mulligan, Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie "Bird" Parker, John Coltrane, Coleman Hawkins, Dexter Gordan, Oscar Peterson, Stan Getz (Girl from Ipanema), Charlie Mingus, Buddy Rich, Art Tatum. Note: LOTS of saxophone - I think @Muddy did a discussion of Sax.
I even met Dizzy Gillespie after a show at the Aur Force Academy. Gave my 8 year old step-son a big laughing bear hug and signed his "Giants of Jazz" book he checked out of his elementary school library - my wife bought a replacement book for the school. Dizzy had like 5 or so cadets and us.
You know recently listened to Ted Templemanās book. Really good and free on audible. This dude pretty much every musician in Southern California in the later half of the 20th century. Point being in kept sending me down a bunch of music wormholes with every story.
And itās not talked about much but the whole Drum and Bass scene that came out of Manchester England via the Chicago house wave. Real big in the 90ās. I love all that shit. 4hero (aka Tom and Jerry, Project AKO and other names I canāt remember rn) Goldie, A Guy Called Gerald.
This is a Guy called Geraldās favorite playlist from ā95. All that stuff is awesome IMO. Song title/artist/time stamp in description. Just play that on a long car ride, your all set. m.youtube.com
I've noticed that a lot of new artists with breakout singlse only have one key. All of their songs sound the same, but only one is good enough to become a hit. Examples: Benson Boone - all of his songs sound like Beautiful Things, but that was the only one which can become a hit; Noah Kane - everything sounds like Dial Drunk, but that was the only one with the novelty to become a hit.
One former producer was explaining that music today is garbage because it has become like drive-through fast food junk food: too easy to make and too easy to consume. It used to be you'd have to get all of the instrumentation and talent, rent sufficient studios and staff, and make something good enough for labels to invest the time and equipment to manufacture hundreds of thousands of LPs, cassettes, and CDs. Then listeners would have to learn the name and artist of that song on the radio, physically get to Tower Records or Best Buy, and but the entire CD with all of the music and not just the one track. Sometimes you strike gold where every track is good, like the Killers or Disturbed debut CDs; other times the only decent track is the one with radio play, like Korn's Y'all Want a Single or Fat Boy Slim's Right Here, Right Now (admittedly, very subjective). Now, all you need is a quiet room and a quality gaming laptop to build everything. Even the vocals no longer need talent to be autotuned and digital streaming negates the need for labels to invest millions in production and distribution.
I still use Pandora to build channels of artists I like to discover new favorites, listen to older faves, or suit my mood. I have tried Spotify, but the algorithm does not seem to work as well as Pandora at matching what I'm looking for.
Most of you damn dirty apes would be much better off if you just focused on listening to recordings of the Lion King, which was loosely based on my life. Thatāll teach you the hakuna matata my friends.
And if you really want to embrace your inner lion - and any sensible hairless ape should embrace their inner lion - just break out this songā¦
Weeheeheehee dee heeheeheehee weeoh aweem away
Weeheeheehee dee heeheeheehee weeoh aweem away
In the jungle, the mighty jungle
The lion sleeps tonight
In the jungle the quiet jungle
The lion sleeps tonight
Wee heeheehee weeoh aweem away
Wee heeheehee weeoh aweem away
Near the village, the peaceful village
The lion sleeps tonight
Near the village, the quiet village
The lion sleeps tonight
Wee heeheeheehee weeoh aweem away
Rrr, la la la weeoh aweem away
Hush, my darling, don't fear, my darling,
The lion sleeps tonight
Hush, my darling, don't fear, my darling,
The lion sleeps tonight
Wah oh oh, wah oh oh, wah oh wimoweh
Weeheeheehee dee heeheeheehee weeoh aweem away
Weeheeheehee dee heeheeheehee weeoh aweem away
ROAR!!!
And rememberā¦no matter how much of a dork you are you have at least a little lion inside you.
Wellā¦there is one being on Godās green Earth doesnāt have any lion in his soul. Unfortunately, that being happens to haunt this fine discussion board rambling about stupid shit and pretending to be a divorce lawyer that attended the worst law school in the country.
Thatās rightā¦Skifredo got no lion in his soul. Not even a nanogram of lion. Indeed, there is not even one molecule of lion-y goodness in that weirdo. ROAR!!!
This summer I keep going back to Dope Lemon on Spotify. Also enjoying the Yannis and the Yaw tracks that have been released. If you like the Foals check it out.
I seem to listen to 3 channels on SiriusXM. 80s on 8, 1st Wave, Classic Rewind - all 80s music. Mostly popular songs, lots of cheesy ones but thereās some gems out there and I look into those bands more. 1st Wave is good for this as they have special shows on, and will play lesser known artists now and then.
Bands I discovered or forgot about and started listening to again:
The Call
New Order
Sisters Of Mercy
Until recently I didnāt even know who Sisters Of Mercy and The Call were. Like Gam said, almost all new music sucks so Iām content with discovering or rediscovering older music.
Other random stuff:
BB King (man he was talented)
Soundtrack to The Color of Money - I even enjoy the instrumental movie score tracks.
I have been listening to Treaty Oak Revival a lot. They're a country/Southern rock band from Texas.

Two different dancers recommended a rock band called Sleep Token, but it wasn't my cup of tea.
Like most old people I hate nearly anything new. I listen to music from the 60's up to the 90's. The one exception is I really enjoy symphonic metal. My favorite right now is a band out of Sweeden called Soilwork

Living in Miami I canāt escape the reggaeton. Every song, same beat. Every song.
I have 5,000+ music files on my computer that I downloaded during the golden era of Napster. I used to Burn 60 minute CDs from those files. My new 2024 Mustang does
not have a CD player. So I now have a flash drive with 1,009 songs on it that I play in my car. Wide variety including foreign languages. Lot of easy listening.
Night Club, The Warning, Halestorm, The Pretty Reckless, In This Moment, New Years Day, Halsey (w/Trent & Atticus Producing) <there's a theme. But then, Rammstein
I love reggaeton
