Listeria Outbreak

Avatar for motorhead
motorheadFat, drunk and stupid is no way to go through life

Normally I’m not one to worry about outbreaks of food borne illnesses - but having said that, the current listeria outbreak concerns me.

  1. Except for the occasional pizza or spaghetti dinner, I think I could literally live on deli sandwiches.

  2. I’m in the at risk category. > 65

Most of the major chains - Subway, Jersey Mikes, Jimmy John’s - claim they do not use Boar’s Head. But perhaps my favorite - Firehouse Subs, I can’t get a firm answer when I google it. I see a lot of “yes” they do but a fair number of “no”.

I believe the Publix stores in Florida use Boar’s Head Meats in their delis. They must be in panic control mode.

But when I saw a doctor on TV say he would never eat freshly sliced deli meat of any brand that sent chills down my spine. I don’t think I’m ready to give it up.

With the disclaimer that I have absolutely ZERO knowledge about how restaurants handle situations like this, or what specific guidelines restaurants operate under when it comes to food borne illnesses...

I would certainly HOPE that any restaurant, especially one with many locations, would either A) be required to abide by strict rules for serving food that might possibly be contaminated in some way or, B) would voluntarily be extremely cautious about serving food that could potentially sicken people or endanger their lives. It seems awfully risky for any restaurant to even think about serving food that could possibly kill people...

Having said that, I would never advise anyone either to TRUST or NOT TO TRUST restaurants in general, or a particular restaurant, because it's really hard to know sometimes who you CAN trust? I guess I would be able to understand your perspective either way. If you're hesitant to trust that it's safe to eat something, I would understand that perspective. If you want to assume that maybe you wouldn't be served anything of questionable safety, I understand that perspective also. I think it's totally fine to be as cautious as you want to be when it comes to something like this!

I try to avoid deli meats and cheeses as they are mass produced, high-processed foods, loaded with artificial flavors and presevatives. Then, they are not going be any fresher, cleaner, or safe from food-borne illnesses than they individual deli/kitchen that serves and sells them. Deli sandwiches and sandwich shops have the additional problem of using ultra-processed breads which have been engineered to have a specific carb-fat ratio which makes them as addictive as OP describes, and very bad for your health and metabolism.

Short answer: no, I don't eat that shit in the first place.

350 million people in this country, 141 people die every day in car accidents, but you still drive, just after a bowl of cereal not a ham sandwich. Ok.
I will take some ham and American cheese (cooper American only) and make an omelet. Happy Labor day.

“Short answer: no, I don't eat that shit in the first place.“

I hear you man. A few years ago I went strict keto and really restricted my carbs and avoided all processed meats for over 2 years. I dropped over 200 pounds.

When I was doing it, it wasn’t that hard. But eventually it was like “I really want a Reuben”

'I dropped over 200 pounds.'

Over 200 pounds? If I did that I'd disappear before I hit that number.
I'm curious how big were you and how big are you now?
Really man the listeria fear should be a wake up call to reconsider and change your diet.

People have died from eating lettuce, too....so nothing is really safe.

What did you like better about firehouse vs the others? From what ive seen its inferior to jersey mikes in every way. The quality of meat used, the flavor, the ingredients.
Also not all deli meats are the same. The Philly steak and tuna from my understanding are higher quality with less additives?
And even regarding carbs, i think jersey mikes makes their own bread fresh daily. You can clearly see the difference with a jersey mikes sub roll vs the others. The key is to hold back on the cheese and high calorie sauces like mayo or chipotle sauce… and do an extra meat option instead of getting a larger sub.

I think a burger is a safer option, as long as the place doesnt fry the beef patties, and you withhold the fatty sauces like mayo.

Substitute baby field greens andcut up veggies for lettuce. Mix the baby field greens and cut up veggies with a little bit of evo and balsamic vinegarette. Prepare a bed of baby field green and the cut up, raw veggies. Grill a yellowfin Tuna Steak rare/medium rare. Place on the bed of greens and veggies and drizzle with a honey-mustard sauce. A fruity Pinot Noir pairs better than a white wine with this.

I’ve been staying away but I’m like you Motörhead Iive off those things. Especially on the road, Jersey Mike’s, Subway, Jimmy John’s are often the healthier options. And that is a low bar but it beats the more fast food type stuff.
