just for fun. post a true trivia fact where two seemingly odd things existed together during the same date/time period in history, which is mind-blowing.
I'll start:
*When The Titanic sank, Harriet Tubman was still alive.
*US President Jimmy Carter was the first commander-in-chief born in a hospital. Every US President born before him, including Reagan weren't born in a hospital.
*Somewhere in the year 2020, we finally stopped paying the war pension to a DAUGHTER of a Civil War Veteran. That's right: we were still paying monthly veterans war pension checks to a woman whose father fought in The Civil War. (She was born very late in his life.)
*One of President Lincoln's sons was in attendance at the opening of The Lincoln Memorial. (I don't believe he spoke)...
*On YouTube, you can see an elderly Maryland man who claimed he witnessed President Lincoln's assassination--because he was a child in Ford's Theater that night. This man appeared on a taped TV show in the 1950s...posted on YouTube.
1903 - First airplane flight ( 12 seconds ) 1909 - First flight across English Channel 1930 - First patent for a jet engine 1961 - First man in space 1969 - Man walks on moon
*There's a picture of Lincoln's coffin visiting New York City by horse carriage and an astute person noticed that the photo most likely also captured a young Teddy Roosevelt looking out the window watching with his sibling because they lived on that street around that apartment floor.
*Before Star Trek, Spock / Leonard Nimoy drove a cab in L.A. and picked up a single young politician passenger--a young JFK in L.A. Both men hailing from Boston so Nimoy recognized his state's politician, but Nimoy himself wasn't famous yet. Imagine: 2 huge 60s icons in one car before they were truly household names.
*When The Space Shuttle Challenger blew up in 1986 and teacher Christa McAuliffe died, Sesame Street and Big Bird realized it dodged a bullet. Big Bird was the original ideal passenger on that flight--so kids could be interested in space, but no one could figure out how to keep it in costume up there. So a US teacher was the next best thing...
The book "Green Eggs and Ham" written by Dr. Seuss contains exactly fifty words and was written to win a bet with Bennet Cerf that he couldn't write a book and get it published using fifty words or less
Daryl, Brian, Brent, Duane, Ron and Rich Sutter were all brothers and all played in the NHL. All but Ron and Rich subsequently were head coaches in the NHL. Three of them had sons that play or have played in the NHL.
Bobby Fischer was the first American to be officially awarded the title of World Chess Champion in 1972 by beating Boris Spassky. It is likely true that neither of them ever step foot in a strip club
The world’s first speeding ticket was issued in 1902 How fast was the offending motorist travelling? A scandalous 45mph.
1 in 4 cars on the UK’s road were made in China Which is a lot, given that there are around 35 million cars in the UK.
A modern Formula 1 car can drive upside down in a tunnel at 120mph
60 million cars are produced every year That’s 165,000 a day, 6,875 an hour and 115 a minute — crazy right?
1 billion cars are currently in use around the world Compared to the world’s population, that’s around one car for every seven people on Earth.
It would take less than a month to get to the moon by car That’s right — drive straight up at an average of 60mph, and you could get to the moon in under a month.
The average car contains over 30,000 unique parts
75% of all cars produced by Rolls Royce are still on the road
Volkswagen owns twelve well-known car brands from 7 European countries Including Volkswagen Passenger Cars, Audi, Seat, Skoda, Bentley, Bugatti, Lamborghini, Porsche, Ducati, Volkswagen Commerical Vehicles, Scania and MAN.
The odds of dying in a car accident are around 1 in 5,000 Compare that to the odds of dying in a plane crash (1 in 11 million), and driving sounds pretty dangerous!
The fun fact about F1 cars is interesting, and this was discussed last year in my kid’s physics class. It goes like this: In 2022, new F1 rules allow for ground effects that produce 1800 kg of downforce at 200 mph. The new F1 car weighs 800 kg, plus 110 kg of fuel, plus a 70 kg driver, which is just more than half the weight of the downforce being generated. So in theory, since the ground effects downforce is greater than the force of gravity, the car would be able to drive upside down, stuck to the top of a tunnel, or under a long, flat bridge, etc. Of course there is a difference between theory and reality, and I don’t think anyone has tried this, nor does it seem possible to get started, and up to a speed of 200 mph upside down. But yes, it works on paper.
