The last time I visited I spent over two hours in line waiting to cross the border to get back in. I’m thinking about getting a global entry card. Is it really as quick and simple as walking past the rest of the of the line with my card and doing what took over two hours last time in less than ten minutes?
But seriously, it is worth it, as long as you are ok with the background check. NEXUS is useful if you only care about going to Canada. Note that not all airports handle it though.
Coming back to the US it literally takes about 45 seconds to go through customs. Just walk up to a machine, scan passport, eye scan, get your receipt, hand it to the customs officer and walk out. don't even say a word to anyone. I don't check luggage so last month from getting off the plane to getting in my car was about 3 minutes. Totally worth it.
I've global entry now about three years. Usually saves me much time getting back into the USA from Mexico. I haven't had opportunity to use it flying yet.
Global Entry is the greatest when returning from TJ. There is a separate line on the right at the new crossing, and I don't think I've ever waited for more than two people in front of me. Totally solves the long waits, and it works in many airports as well when returning from international flights, AND Global Entry provides the same benefits as TSA Pre.
The other trick is get yourself a US Passport Card for entry into Mexico. It can't be stamped, so there is no written trail of your visit.
I got global entry last year and used it on my last visit few months back. It was one of the best decisions ive made in my life. It is more than worth it when you can skip the line that is well above few hours long.
