OT: Great line

I was reading an online article and the writer was making a point about hypocrisy and he cited a line by Abraham Lincoln w.r.t. hypocrisy which I had never heard b/f and thought was very clever - per the article:

"... “President Abraham Lincoln once described a hypocrite as ‘the man who murdered his own parents, and then pleaded for mercy on the grounds that he was an orphan." ..."

LOL - that's good

meaning supreme self-confidence : nerve, gall

Yiddish khutspe, from Late Hebrew ḥuṣpāh

Thats is actually an Alan Dershowitz quote describing the meaning of the word chutzpah - i.e. A man murders his parents and at his sentencing hearing he begs the judge for mercy because he is an orphan......

Lincoln seemed to understand the lunacy of certain Americans. Sadly, now the lunacy is a considerable portion of the population. Back in his day, the idiots usually didn’t live past childhood.

I thought that story along with the definition of chutzpah was originally a Jackie Mason but.

The Menendez Brothers have been in for 30 years. And there is new evidence in the case, a letter that the younger brother Eric sent over a year before the murder detailing all the sexual abuse they suffered at the hands of their father.

This evidence could not have been available at trial. So it could now be used for a Habeas Petition and for overturning the trial.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N5OH4He7…

Legal observers say that because of what we now know about such abuse, if they were tried today, they would not have been convicted of murder 1 and would not have received life sentences.

Jurors interviewed after the trial had said, "There is no way a father could do that to his sons." So they did not believe Lyle and Eric.

But for the whole country we run around 200 to 300 parricides a year.

Mones consulted for the Menendez Defense.

I got to meet him when he came to town to help defend a man who beat up the elderly Jesuit who had raped him and his brother 35 years ago.
So there is a move to get the Menendez Brothers a new trial. And probably if the earlier trial is overturned, then that will be the end of their case.

Actually, wasn't the lunacy the same percentage in Lincoln's time as it is %today? Roughly 50% of the country were democrat party lunatics who had a temper tantrum and caused chaos when they didn't like the results of an election. The more things change, the more they remain the same.

In Lincoln's time, the Republican Party was the more progressive, having such anti-slavery leaders as Charles Sumner of Massachusetts, and James C. Fremont of California.

The Republican Party started as an anti-slavery and Northern Party.

The Democratic Party, under Stephen Douglass of Illinois wanted to allow slavery to continue and to follow Douglass's doctrine of popular soveriengty.

What happened in 1860 was that Southerners demanded "a slave code for the West", insisting that slavery be allowed to expand into the West.

So when they did not get this, they followed the lead of the Senator from Mississippi, Jefferson Davis, and walked out of the convention.

So with the Democrats split, Lincoln of the new Republican Party was able to win.

And then it was during the Grant Administration, one of our worst Presidents, 1868 - 1876, that the Republican Party became the Party of Big Business and of Carpet Baggers.

The Republican Party would move further to the Right, when Teddy Roosevelt ran againt the man who had been his Vp, William Howard Taft, and thus split the party and destroyed its progressive wing.

More than anything, what Roosevedt wanted was to get the US into WWI. But his acts caused the Democrate, Woodrow Wilson, to win. And we did go into WWI.

Wilson's crowning achievement was the League of Nations.

But the only part of the Repulican Party left was the reactionary wing. And

The leftist/anarchist lunacy seems has always been there - it's just in the past they were seen as fringe but the current Democrat politicians have normalized-it as part of their power-grab.

    ...

But the only part of the Republican Party left was the reactionary wing, and they committed themselves, under Senator Henry Cabot Lodge, to preventing the US from joining the League of Nations. And these Republican Reactionaries, Harding Coolidge, and Hoover, gave us the reckless and irresponsible laissez-faire policies which brought on the Great Depression.

The League of Nations would do its best. It took actions which slowed the outbreak of WWII. But without US involvement and with Republican isolationists and Nazi sympathizers running about, what the League could do was limited.
