Sequels and Remakes for the most part really suck

And it got me thinking. Usually these just don't work out at all. Off the top of my head there's not many but sequels that did work Empire strikes back, The Two Towers, Godfather II, Die Hard 2 and Lethal Weapon II, Terminator II and I don't if you'd consider The Color of Money to be a sequel but it's better than The Hustler. But that's all I could think of. Remakes Scarface and 3:10 to Yuma but there are probably more.
This is all coming from someone who can't wait for Top Gun 2 but I already know going in it's probably gonna suck. There is a chance though they get it right. What do you think of all these remakes and sequels? Do you actually enjoy them or do you think it's all pretty much trash. There's a part of me that says hey why not give it a shot, see what happens but then there's this other part of me that says why don't we make something of this era where in right now. Something original and cool and stop having to reach back. Thoughts? Maybe y'all disagree and there a lot more good sequels and remakes I'm just an idiot that's forgetting them.
Got something to say?

And nightmare on elm street remake. Lets replace Robert England with a short guy. I've heard the reasoning was because Jason voorhees was played by so many different guys. Well Jason wore a mask (or a potato sack that looked more like a pillowcase in part two haha). Nightmare on elm street also made Freddy the grounds keeper at the school with the claw idea coming from a small gardening rake. Holy shit how clever! I saw it for free (in the theatre-brother in law had passes) and still want my money back!
Sequel I did like besides empire strikes back was gremlins. Hoping to get a 3rd movie and rumour was that different liquids (cokes, alcohol, juices) would affect the mogwai I believe they were called differently. But all we got after all this time was the recent mountain dew commercial!
I had hoped that the pandemic might show people that they do not need Hollywood stars and professional athletes for entertainment, and maybe reduce the influence and attention these woke children unwarrantedly demand. Unfortunately, people are falling back into the same old bad habits.
The Godfather 2 was a major exception.
In porn land - there are too many sequels to count. One of my favorite porn sequels is Pretty Peaches 2. But there were fails too - as Insatiable 2 was nothing compared to the first one.
forget about sequels.how about hollywood coming up with originals that will stand the test of time? at the moment i don't see many film makers creating movies that make me think that they are going to be the scorsese, kubrick, cameron, etc. i'm sure there are a few up and comers but you'll have to weed out a lot of bad ones. the only one i can think of that has the potential to be in that level maybe chad stahelski.
Not a movie but a TV series, Cobra Kai, I think does a good job of paying homage to the original while going in an awesome new direction. Plus it’s pretty cool that most of the older cast members were the actual actors from the original Karate Kid movies.
Otherwise, yes I generally agree with the main point.
I only saw a few minutes of Coming 2 America. I was drunk and on vacation in New Orleans so when our group of friends decided to watch it, I couldn't get into it at all and went back to my own hotel room to pass out. The movie also crashed halfway through so no one got to finish it. But we all knew it had gotten bad reviews. Couldn't tell you anything that happened in it because I was so uninterested.
Another is independent series made with continuing characters (Star Trek). Here the writers and directors make a huge difference, as even Star Trek alternated poor and excellent efforts.
Too often, plot lines are lost or buried in "improved" special effects.
Some, like Star Wars (unsure), LoTR, and Marvel were made as part of what was always intended to be a story arc spanning more than a single movie. Others, like T2 and Godfather 2, were expansions of the world and story done by a passionate team dedicated to the the original.
Of course, even if all the above conditions are met, that doesn't guarantee a grwat film. I am suprised at how many terrible films have all-star casts. Almost all Netflix films are crap, no matter who they sign to cast.
I agree that serial movies that were based on a single work like LOTR seem to turn out better. Re Godfather 2, both it and the first movie were based on a single book. Godfather 3 was based on an affair Sonny had in the book and what became the Andy Garcia character. Other than the affair, all of the material in Godfather 3 was outside the original book.
I agree with most of the examples of good sequels posted above. I’d add X-Men 2 and The Dark Knight to those. Harry Potter as well. Not so much for the Divergent, Hunger Games and Twilight series.
So this was one of the rare movies where I thought the sequel was better than the original. Didn't mention it before because I had forgotten about it honestly. Wasn't exactly the most talked about trilogy made haha.
Question how good was lotr 3? I remember liking part 2 way back when as I saw it in the theatres. But I must not have liked it all that much as I got the 3 movie DVD box set for Christmas back in the good ole days. Still have it but never have watched it in all this time!
Most of the action with King Theoden, Gandalf, and Aragorn is pretty fucking awesome. Sam and Frodo get pretty fucking faggy. Golluk does Gollum. Definitely worth the watch.
I thought it was due to a stressful move, but I just looked on imdb and saw that lotr 3 was 2003 and my move back then was in 2002 (when part two came out).
I think I started working a lot more and different hours by then (same company different dept kind of thing).
My attention span for longer movies is the worst so I miss a lot of the 3 hour movies. This one I do want to see. Maybe by 2023 so I'll only be 20 years behind.
Can watch football for like 8 hours straight (3 games) on NFl Sundays and would spend 4-5 hours in a strip club before corona virus at least once a month I'd say. But just something about movies....even with Netflix I'm like oh I'm not watching that its too long (glad it shows runtimes up front for every movie).
But as for hating the first two, nope I liked them. Hating the first two would be star wars (1 and 2) where I have revenge of the Sith still in the shrink wrap. Of course that may because a friend and former roommate of mine tells me I have to watch it (guy loves star wars whereas I only liked 4,5,6 and pretty much refuse to watch anymore of them after how bad 1 and 2 were)
Hated karate kid 2 though back in the day (I was still a young kid haha).
Generally, I don't like re-makes, and I agree with a few mentioned above as the worst ones ever: Deathwish, Robocop, Nightmare on Elm Street. Horrible. On the other hand, one I really enjoyed was Due Date (Robert Downey Jr., Zach Galifianakis) which is essentially a re-make of Planes, Trains and Automobiles (Steve Martin, John Candy). It had some truly hysterical scenes like when they get totally stoned while driving and Downey Jr. hallucinates Galifianakis as a dog. But it's hard to beat the Steve Martin car rental scene. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pBXL7LwQ… I read somewhere that the film received an "R" rating based solely on that one scene with all the repeated "fucks" over and over, but Hughes refused to alter it despite the rating. Now a more direct re-make is in the works with the same name "Planes, Trains and Automobiles" and will star Will Smith and Kevin Hart. We'll see how it turns out. I think it's easier to do a comedy re-make than action, drama or horror.
