This seems like something bizarre enough that SJG could be a believer.
It is easier to pull an organization together in the middle of the country. The housing is much cheaper, and the folks on both coasts definitely begin to look odd. It is also easy to flip a deeply religious (Bible Belt) person - as they already hold intense beliefs. It simply requires a bit of manipulation.
