Internet Censorship

money was invented for handing to women, but buying dances is a chump's game
The Internet has always been controversial, because it does not conform to the limits which are held to in most other media. Now this pertains to visual images, but also to text.

Back in the mid-90's, at the Gilroy Public Library, a church group made an issue of it. They sent someone in to the children's section and she went directly to some scatological porn, and then tried to get a sheriffs deputy to arrest the children's librarian.

Little by little the Internet is getting more civilized. Most commercial sites, and the major service providers, do impose limits. Some limits were set up in order to satiate the credit card companies. Most of the stuff with content which would offend most people will be labeled as 'adult' or 'porn'.

But for myself I always have enjoyed the openness and flexibility of the Internet, and I don't want us to lose anymore of it.

And kudos to our Founder for not ever labeling TUSCL that way. No reason to. It would only make it so less people could use it.

But here I want to start out just by asking, what are the real motives and standards for those who do want to censor the Internet?

I think what it really comes down to is that they are made uncomfortable with the idea that some sort of person they look down on might be getting off on something. And their standard for this is that they find the material arousing.

Here I want to offer an example:

This Carbonic Service has their Cylinder Sally painted on all of their trucks, and they run all over our roadways.

I don't think anyone objects to their icon. This company was established in 1947.

The hair, the makeup, the demeanor though, could arouse someone.

It is a retro image, playing on nostalgia for the 1940's. And during WWII their seemed to be an acceptance of pin up photos.

I believe that if the image was one of an Afro American hip hop artist, with the heavy makeup and the same type of facial expression, although with the same level of 40's coverage, and driving around on our roadways, that some people would object. They would object because they found the image arousing, and because they were distressed about who else might be getting aroused by it.

So much of this kind of censorship comes down to guilty until proven innocent forms of enforcement.

    ^^^^ agreed!

And it is already there in FOSTA. But locally there are lots of forms.

My understanding is that many TUSCLer's are being blocked when traveling and trying to use house WIfi, these anti-porn lists.

Tuscl used to work fine with the free proxy servers. That solved the problem. But as TUSCL has been upgraded to have more client side stuff, it does not work with proxies any more. Would be nice it if could work with proxies again. Hint Hint Hint Founder.

The Internet used to have very lose rules. But then there were crackdowns. Here in Gilroy, a church group sent someone in to the public library, children's section, where she promptly went to something very offensive. Then she tried to make a sherrif's deputy arrest the children's librarian.

They got their issue into TV news.
