Built in 1877 for private parties, then bought by the state in 1903
Nancy Reagan had refused to live in it, moving out after only 4 months in 1967. So their Hollywood friends built this monstrosity in the suburb Carmichael. Finished just after Regan was leaving office.
But then Jerry Brown refused to live in that. Having the state rent him a small apartment. He also refused to ride around in a limousine.
I knew he tried to sell the Reagan Mansion, but the state legislature blocked him.
Well it turns out that by the end of his second term, 1982, the Reagan Mansion was sold. I had not known this.
Then Deukmegian, Wilson, and Davis each lived in different Carmichael residences. And Schwarzenegger stayed at Hilton Regency Hotel when he stayed over. But usually he commuted each day by his private jet from his home in the Brentwood area.
The original Governor's Mansion had been converted to a museum right after the Reagans moved out.
Jerry Brown had been married in 2005. During his third term they lived in a loft in downtown Sacramento.
I had been afraid that with him now married, that he was living in the Reagan Mansion. Not so. And with his third term he moved with his wife back into the original Governor's Mansion.
It's not really that big, not the foot print. Its a Victorian, 3 stories and with a steep roof.
I see this as a very positive story.
And people were right to wonder if Nancy Reagan was going to be willing to live in the White House.

I deal with politicians today who talk about how much they always admired Nancy and of how she was "a gracious lady".
