Admittedly, and thankfully, I'm no millenial which probably leads to my not understanding the infatuation so many people have with shallow, self-absorbed instagram models.

Nor do I get why these ladies spend so much money and time altering their appearances to resemble cartoon figures and then post pictures of themselves in poses that accentuate these ridiculously unnatural proportions in the first place.

Can anyone explain it to me?

Oh, and why do you care how I, or any of us, rate the girls you like?
I think fishsticks is a frequent poster for this

Are you looking for some kind of confirmation that what you find attractive is in line with what the mainstream thinks?

flagooner...i'm not a millenial either.......but i'm also only a few years from being born in those years that are considered a millenial.

i don't even have an instagram. facebook is the only social media thing i use. i check the pages of a few instagram models regularly....because i find them hot.....but that's it. i'm not even signed up on instagram.

those curvy cartoon girls just aren't your taste. but some of them get paid.....so that's why they post them pics on instagram. i don't make many of those threads like "rate this girl" but the last one i made.......pretty much everyone agreed that latina was hot. i must be doing something right because the other threads asking to a rate a girl.......the opinions varied a lot :-) i just like to see people's opinions on girls...that's it

I feel like it does inspire a lot of girls to reach their own personal heights of vanity, and phoniness. It’s like a whole culture of duck face.

"infatuation so many people have with shallow, self-absorbed instagram models."

Yes, they are incredibly shallow and self-absorbed. What else is new?

"Nor do I get why these ladies spend so much money and time altering their appearances to resemble cartoon figures"

I cant speak for others but the "cartoon figure" look is awesome to me. Now some overdo it a bit and i usually hate any kind of facial work(lip-jobs), but there it is.

"and then post pictures of themselves in poses that accentuate these ridiculously unnatural proportions in the first place."

I honestly dont know the reasons. There could be a number of reasons. I think some of them include:

    -Attention
-they spent good money on that body so why not flaunt it?
-looking for a sugar daddy/celebrity/modeling job
-i do think some of them are paid for it(no idea by whom)

1-Popular girls make lot of money from Instagram. Depends on how many followers they have.
2-Girls who try to become models can get their connections/network improved
3-Girls do photo shoots for calendars which will be sold all over the world's
4-Actresses and normal girls want to be special with their followers by appearing in different outfits different hair styles

Some girls do like attention. They can go out of their way to get it too.

While I, too, long for the days when slim model-shaped bodies were the standard of beauty and all the chubby chasers whined about how "real women have curves", I think the "distorted cartoon-like caricature" standard of feminine beauty will be around for a while.

Agree with Darkblue about the reasons... not just attention whoring, but "influencers" on the big social media platforms can reap a lot of income from their sites, as well as build a brand, get attention from agents, etc.

I think the exaggerated curves show up better in selfies also. The technology of the time seems to influence beauty ideals, since it’s the filter though which we see these women. Phone selfies are the primary medium for Instagram, and don’t show slender curves very well. Strippers are often relatively petite, and have cute faces. Run way models are rail thin, and tall. Actresses are medium height, slender, and have dramatic facial features.

It would have been nice if Instagram was around several years ago. It would have been easier to remember a girl if she says she's a model. In my defense, it was a dancer and model I only knew for two nights. She went back to Vegas.

There has never been a shortage of self-absorbed good looking girls. It’s just that Instagram makes it easy for those girls to make money and showcase their looks.

There were self-absorbed hotties long ago too - but they didn’t have social media to spread themselves around like they do now.

Millenialls are the first generation to grow up in America that has no hope for a future better than t heir parents. We're slowly fading and while it will take decades to complete the fall, millenialls know the world as it exists, will not be getting better. Add in the fact they have grown up avoiding face to face contact and have communicated and viewed electronically since young and you have what we have now: "a culture fixated on cartoonish phoniness". I would rather fondle a 5 than look at pics of a 10.

In reference to skibum609’s post. I somewhat agree. I think there is also an element to the change in the American economy. We have changed our primary methods of generating revenue - from the manufacture of hard goods - to entertainment and various services.

In my view young folks must see little to be derived from performing physical labor. This generation has grown up with smart phones and full time internet access. Their stars aren’t the movie stars of prior generations. The stars are YouTube/instagram folks with millions of followers. Nielsen ratings have been replaced with likes. Waiting for prime time tv shows makes little sense to them too.

I’m befuddled with the people my kids follow, but they seem entertaining. They don’t follow the Kardashians, so maybe that’s a good thing?

I think the entire definition of stardom has changed. It’s something that I’m still struggling to grasp, but it’s important to try and relate (if one has kids) as things will continue to move in different directions.

"Nor do I get why these ladies spend so much money and time altering their appearances to resemble cartoon figures and then post pictures of themselves in poses that accentuate these ridiculously unnatural proportions in the first place."

    1. Narcissism

    2. ROI... they make money on brand sponsorships, get modeling gigs (fashion, print, trade show, etc.), they sell their own branded products (calendars, exercise videos, etc), and so on.

Neither Facebook or Instagram gets a lot of viewership from millennials. Both platforms skew older than that. That's why hot millennials posting there (particularly IG) do so well.

Well, they're in front of us and touchable. How "real" they are is debatable on a case-by-case basis.

It feels like anytime someone over 40 years old doesn't like or understand a thing, the knee-jerk reaction is to blame millennialism.

I don't necessarily understand the fascination with social media nor have I but I am older, probably older than the majority of people on this site but from the few relationships I have had wit younger women they seem hooked on following other women and then talking about who they follow on IG with their Twitter accounts.

You'll see comments like "making my own brand" and attempts to be paid by signing up for other IG accounts which by doing so supposedly get you more followers.....I've always called it the I'm famous for trying to be famous on IG job description but if you can get enough people to buy into the BS there are a tiny % that do make a decent living.....although I think it is a lot smaller of a % than most people realize---

I use to tell my one ex if she spent just a 1/3 of the time working to be successful as she did trying to convince people on her social media accounts she was successful she would have been a lot further ahead in life.

And I guess I fit Ishmael's description --I'm over 40 and I blame a fair amount of the nonsense that goes on in today's culture on millennialism........

A friend of mine calls what I use to term the "me too" follower mindset as what is now referred to as FOMO---or fear of missing out.....it's what keeps the followers trying to live the fake lives portrayed by the famous for being famous......and the circle keeps turning.

Millenials with a positive attitude, good character, and good work ethic are doing very well. Employers are desperate to hire and promote them. These individuals will have better lives than prior generations.

That means America isn’t doomed as long as, at some point in their lives, Millenials wake up and decide to take responsibility for their own lives. Stranger things have happened.

"Millenials with a positive attitude, good character, and good work ethic are doing very well."

Anyone with those traits would be likely to succeed. And employers are always looking for young people who exhibit them.

The problem is that the percentage of young adults with a good work ethic seems to be declining. I don't think it is just my perception as Millenials have been steotyped to be very entitled. Usually stereotypes are based on something.

A positive attitude, good work ethics, and good character, used to be the formula for success, but for many reasons, it’s just not enough anymore.

"A positive attitude, good work ethics, and good character, used to be the formula for success, but for many reasons, it’s just not enough anymore."

While this very well might be true spending time on endless selfies and following the Kardashians to the point they are your role models isn't going to cut it either.

The largest difference in being successful and maintaining a level of success in today's world seems to me to be the single fact you need to constantly keep educating yourself and understand what you learned ( regardless of how or where you were educated) is going to become obsolete knowledge.

I can't stress enough I am not lumping everyone between the ages of 22-35 into one big pot but my own observations male and female, friends & family, sex workers and non sex workers is the pot with people not wanting to put in the time and effort is getting larger. There are opportunities for someone who has the drive and determination but everyone wants it now. To me this is where the downside of social media comes to light......the images of someone living the good life with little effort but a a good line and some street hustle can work for a chosen few, but it is very few, and in those cases it has as much to do with luck and who that person knew than it did anything else. I see what I would call "wannabes and posers fooling people into believing the BS and people in that 22-35 age bracket buying into it.

Something I’ve observed with millenials is they are expert resume builders, encouraged by university admissions departments. They participate in a string of feel-good politically-correct experiences. What they accomplish, or learn, from these check list experiences is unclear.
