Ex Presidents(or soon to be)

Did you all know that soon to be Mr. Obama vetoed a bipartisan bill that placed a time limit on the amount of secret service protection for former presidents(this measure was originally proposed by Bush II). What people do not know since security for ex-presidents seems like a good idea (even though the bill would have cut back on security after 15 or so years not eliminated it) it would have also limited the ex-president's GOVERNMENT PAID travel budget to $200,000.00 (two hundred thousand dollars!!) per year. by vetoing the bill he has ensured that he and his family have an unlimited expense account on OUR dime for the rest of his life!! No president has abused the privilege except Bill and Hillary who use government money to go to their "speaking engagements" and the law would not have affected them it would have started with George Bush going forward.
So guess what we get to still pay for Barry and Michelle's extravagant vacations to Spain, Hawaii, Martha's Vineyard, and where ever else they decide to go!
Why can't he use some of his huge mid 6 figure pension supplement his travel when he exceeds $200,000.00!
Typical politician once they get a taste of the government trough they never want to stop gorging themselves!

It's shit like this why so many don't trust government and politicians, many of them become politicians so they can subsequently become lobbyists and make a killing - and many that work in a position where they oversee a certain industry will then go work for that industry

What actors and athletes make is obscene as well. We are all so stupid to keep buying tickets and merchandise.

But let's remember what tiredtraveler is saying. We choose to watch the today show, or go to Soldier Field, or see Dr. Strange in theaters. We don't get a choice on our taxes. We either pay them or go to prison, so they can be wasted on the retirement of politicians after they have finished their turn at ruining this country. It's fucking disgraceful.

Gammanu nailed it.

It is supposed to be the government working for us, not the other way around.

Yea, actually seems reasonable to me. Think of all the people a president pisses off (e.g. droning all over the world). They deserve generous protection for life.

What is the original reference for your OP, Tired? Presidents always had lifetime SS protection until 1997. Lifetime SS protection was reinstated in 2013, and made retroactive (increasing GWB protection to lifetime). Sounds like the R's aren't content with wining everything in the election and just want to be hateful one last time, imo, based on OP.

en.wikipedia.org

Travel budget is a whole separate issues. Excessive? Yes, but bundling that with a SS provision would doom it, imo. Another thing that doesn't make sense to me in the OP is the suggestion that a reduced benefit would be retroactive to GWB. I don't think GWB's retirement benefits can be reduced by a subsequent congress/president (only increased in the above case of SS protection).

I get a round trip boat ticket to Martha's Vineyard for $42.00. No big deal.

I am not a fan it it in the private sector. So I am even less a fan of it in the public sector! Too many of those on top treat the organization (or the U.S. Treasury in this case) war chest as their personal piggy bank. Degrading! The rationalizations are always sicking to me.

Thanks for sharing.
