If you start a discussion you get emails when someone replies to the post.
But lets say you add to a discussion? I don't seem to get updates on those. is there something I am missing to get those?

Well - that only makes sense - if you posted a comment then you know about it - but if someone posted on a thread you started you won't know unless you go looking for it.
You can always look in your profile to see all your comments and then click on those threads.
