Detroit Hotels

Thinking about going to Detroit in February--strictly to hit some of the clubs (Henry VIII, Bogart's, etc) that I've heard so much about. With regards to safe, inexpensive hotels, do you think there are any decent deals to be had? I'm hoping that since it's the off-season, I can find a decent hotel for two or three days without spending a ton of money. $60-$70 per night would be a good range, but I don't want to be throwing down well over $100 a night. Guess I'll do my research.

Thanks.

If you're going to the Inkster clubs like Henry VIII and Bogart's, there are chain hotels near the airport. You could also try the Holiday Inn Express or the Days Inn, which are on Michigan Ave near I-275. All these hotels are within 5 or 6 miles of the clubs. Some hotels are closer, but you would not want to stay in them.

If you were going to 8 Mile clubs, you could look at hotels in Southfield or Farmington Hills.

Thanks, man. I guess I'll have to decide between the two areas. Leaning heavily toward the Inkster clubs, though. I should be able to have a good time there, I think.

Hmm. One more thing. Is there any kind of shuttle/train line that runs between downtown Detroit and the airport? It looks like the airport is actually well west of downtown Detroit.

    Thanks.

There are quite a few nice hotels adjacent to the airport in Detroit by I-94 off of Merriman.

Flight Club, Bogarts and Henry's are all less than about 5 miles away from these hotels. The Landing Strip is even closer to those hotels, within a few miles.

I'd call a cab or UBER to get to the clubs. It's really a very short distance.

    Hey,

It sounds like you want to save some money - but if you're in Inkster, at least spend a little time at the Flight Club. H8 and Bogart's are cheap, but keep in mind you get what you pay for. The talent level at FC is generally way better.

I don't believe there is any public transportation in the Romulus/Inkster area.
Juice, you could take a bike or a moped I suppose.

But for you Juice, there are some nice ponds and water retention areas in the vicinity so you can take a bath before hitting the clubs if you want to save money on hotel rooms.

The ponds should be unfrozen by July of next year. So, you're good.

Downtown, by the bus station should be some of the rental car places. They won't be inexpensive, city locations aren't as cheap as airport car rental locations.

As far as getting out to the Airport rental locations, there is SMART Bus service, it's a regional mass transit system should have a bus from downtown out to the airport if I recall correctly. I'll research it, I know the bus system website. Motel/hotel, yeah, airport locations are numerous, motels on Michigan Ave. out by Bogarts and Flight clubs are dives. You take your chances there. I recommend the airport locations, overall.

I haven't been to Detroit in over 20 years but I remember some White Castle restaurants in the area, just look in the dumpsters for old newspapers, and rip out the coupons. Additionally if you don't shower for a few days I think they are open 24 hours so you could camp out in the bathroom but if you need to shit go to whichever McDonalds is close by.

    One last question

What's the best way to mingle with the locals so i can get the "real" Michigan experience in Detroit

Also I've read some about the AMPs and Casino's for poker...any recommendations ?

For 8 mile clubs, I'd stay in Farmington Hills at the Motel 6 on Grand River. It's a safe area, near the I-696-I-96 freeway which will get you about 3 miles away from any of the 8 Mile clubs. Check out the Penthouse Club on 8 Mile. It's pricey, but the women for the most part are mighty fine. Players and Coliseum and Scores on the East side are 3 miles from I-696, also.

As far as buffet dining, I'll have to think about that. There are chain restaurant buffet options but I can't think of any offhand.

I just realized you want to do the Detroit Trip in February maybe you should just camp out near the Detroit River if it doesn't freeze over you can use it for bathing before you hit the clubs.

I stayed at a chain hotel near the airport last summer. It was under $100. But it was a decent hike to the clubs on uber.

By the way you're crazy to go to Detroit in February. Head south to the Miami meet up instead. Nothing available in Detroit that you can't also get at tootsies.

Was just in Detroit this week. Stayed at a Hyatt in Lavonia which seems like a very safe area. An easy 10 minute drive to Penthouse Club. Room was about $140 a night so maybe a bit more than what the OP was looking to spend, but FWIW for anyone else.

Hotel Magnuson by the airport is pretty cheap and not too bad (2 stars better than 1)...

I've only been to the D once for a SC trip back on July 2014.

Stayed at a hotel near the airport – it was a solid 2-star – def nothing fancy but room was big-enough; clean-enough; and in good-enough condition for my purposes which was sleeping and showering – and the area was fine – I believe the room was about b/w $55 and $65; can't remember right now.

You can do a search on Hotels.com and set the price-filter to the max you are willing to pay; then sort the subsequent list by “user rating” and that should get you a decent-enough room. You can either book that hotel thru Hotels.com or go to the particular hotel's website in case it may be slightly cheaper there.

Hotels.com also has a filter to filter hotels that have an airport shuttle-service in case you need this - I used a hotel w/ a shuttle service to get to the hotel b/c I was renting my car off-airport b/c IME it's often cheaper.

Enterprise rent-a-car has a $9.99/day compact special (slightly more for bigger cars) but just for weekends and one *has* to rent from Fr – Mo (all 3-days) to get the special – unfortunately the weekend special is not available @ airport locations and sometimes not at locations close to the airport.

What I do if find a hotel that has an airport shuttle *and* is within 5-miles of an Enterprise location since that's how far Enterprise will go to pick you-up; so I fly-in, take the hotel shuttle form airport to hotel; call Enterprise to pick-me-up at my hotel and then I get my rental.

But you may be able to get a decent car-rental at the airport using a good website like Priceline.com and avoid jumping thru the hoops I described.

I try to book a hotel on Priceline, Orbits and Travelocity, and also the Hotel's websites for the cheapest rates, and base it off of which clubs I am considering, and book a hotel that's close enough to the club, yet still in a safe area. If It's H8, Bogies and Flight Club then it's often in one of the hotels in Romulus near the Airport.

The last time I was looking one the cheapest and closest places was the Comfort inn near Greenfield Village. Wasn't so sure of the area being on Michigan Ave so didn't stay there, but my last trip there I drove by to see how the area looked. The hotel and the area looked pretty decent and well lit, and it was a straight shot down Michigan avenue to first the Criket then on to the other clubs, so I probably will stay there the next time I am in town.
