I think this kind of hacking is not that uncommon.
I know personally of a kid who hacked into his teacher's laptop. The story made the local newspapers and was a huge embarrassment to the parents (who were very wealthy). They hired an attorney and the kid got off, easy. The kid himself went on to an ivy education and became a successful lawyer.
In the movie "War Games," Matthew Broderick's character uses his computer to change his girlfriend's grades. This happens before he accidently hacks NORAD and...well that's the plot. Many years ago two pre-teens in Southern California (I think it was Beverly Hills, CA) hacked Bank of America Visa and found a way to delete credit card balances. They went to neighbors and sold their services for about $25.00 a card. They got caught because Bank of America Visa saw a dramatic spike in full balances being paid off in one ZIP code in one month. The investigation led B of A to the kids who were convicted of fraud in juvenile proceedings.

Still, good for him.
