We're at a time of cultural transition. On the one hand, you have devout Catholics still preaching abstinence before marriage and the banishment of birth control. On the other, you have kids using Tinder to find hookups and recognizing they like having the ability to be with anyone at any time.
Plus, we're in a generation of options. Folks are becoming disillusioned with politics because there's only two choices. We'd prefer something like TV, where we've gone from three or four choices in the 70's to hundreds in the 90's to thousands today, or the Internet, where the options are infinite. Are we expect a generation used to infinite choices and the ability to pursue something new at any time to make the decision to commit to doing just about everything with one person for upwards of 70 years?
Maybe it's time for us to rethink marriage on the whole.
I see they snuck in a second reason for not getting married. Wealth inequality. They want to raise taxes on men even more. I believe that will cause more men not to get married if they do that. We're already taxed enough.
Someone could do another study and claim that the rise in chemicals in the environment is lowering testosterone levels in all men, thus decreasing their sex drive and their desire to get married. Just because you see 2 things, one does not necessarily cause another. There was porn around before the internet.
For example someone could do a study and claim that solar radiation output of the sun is the biggest factor determining temperatures on all the planets regardless of trace greenhouse gases. If we were able to shift the orbit of the Earth out just a little bit and we entered an ice age, I would believe that is confirmation.
Basically the argument was that men get screwed via marriage laws and the court system. Why bother following the system that is not equal and screws men over? If I got married to a girl now with kids of her own what would I get out of it if she decided to then get divorced? Half of all my life savings plus child support for the kids that she already had. It's not a good deal for me. Marriage is about making deals and financial agreements or being partners after you get past the sex part. If the system is rigged against one partner when the deal goes bad, then it is not a good deal to get into.
Wrong, or at least extremely oversimplified. First of all, if 2 people are in a long-term shack-up, I have more faith in that lasting that a lot of official marriages. For the simple reason that the 2 people clearly get it that it's on them, not God or the government, to make it work.
There is no real proof that the "traditional" family is the best way to raise kids. Kids just need at least one adult in their lives who has the kid's interests as their top priority.
The big open question with sex work is, is it inherently harmful psychologically to sex workers, or is it simply society's contempt for sex workers that makes sex work psychologically harmful? An in-demand escort can easily make $70,000+ a year, working well under 1000 hours a year (half-time). If it's not hurting her psychologically, escorting is the perfect job for a single mom. There's a good chance that a society that accepts the fact that many guys seem satisfied with (just) NSA hook-ups can still provide kids with a good, happy childhood. Trying to force these guys to be husbands and fathers in exchange for pussy is not exactly a sure-fire alternative.
