I think 9 years is a steeply cost. I remember Albert Talton who was notrious for counterfeit 20s was only given 5 years I believe behind bars and he made history as one of the most notorious counterfeiters in American history. This kid just misused mama's money according to that article.
Famili relations or not, you steal $3.6M from someone and you're bound to get a steep penalty...
