14 arrested in RI on prostitution-related charges

SCITUATE, R.I.—State police say 14 people have been arrested in Rhode Island on prostitution-related charges.

The arrests happened Saturday when state troopers conducted a sting of a brothel in Providence. State troopers posed undercover either as female prostitutes or male panderers and security guards, and arrested male customers once they agreed to pay money in exchange for a sex act.

The 14 were arraigned before a justice of the peace at Rhode Island State Police headquarters. State Police say about half of those arrested were found to be in the country illegally.

The General Assembly last year closed a loophole in state law that permitted prostitution as long as it occurred indoors.

There's apparently more to this than first meets the eye. The newly elected independent Governor of RI has pledged to end the previous practice of mandating that firms doing business with the state of RI use E-verify, a free Internet-based system run by the federal govt. that allows businesses to determine the eligibility of their employees to work in the USA. The current head of the RI State Police likes the current system and has vowed to continue to actively work with federal authorities to catch undocumented immigrants in RI.

This recent takeover & sting use of an alleged brothel where some of the workers there were apparently in the USA illegally was meant to at least partially embarrass the incoming Governor & maybe change his mind, which I don't think he will. We'll see...
