Mattress Development Co. launches Playboy line

LAS VEGAS — Mattress Development Co. is getting into bed with Playboy magazine.

The New Jersey-based bedding producer, headed by industry veteran Stuart Carlitz, is introducing two Playboy-brand sleep sets at the Eclipse and Eastman House showroom here, World Market Center C-1536.

"This is a ‘have more fun in bed' mattress line," said Carlitz. He said the beds are designed "to enhance and tie together slumber, sex and sleep surfaces."

Playboy Enterprises announced the new line, saying it will be manufactured and distributed by The Merrick Group, a specialty sleep producer, and its partner, Mattress Development Co.

"Playboy is excited to join forces with a leader in the industry to create an exceptional new line of mattresses and break into a new product category," said Adrianna Chinnici, vice president of licensing for Playboy Enterprises.

The complete line of Playboy-brand beds, which will include a number of different styles, will be available to ship beginning in the spring. The mattresses will be available in furniture stores, specialty sleep stores and department stores, and will retail from $699 to $2,999.

"We're delighted to be working with Playboy to create this new line of mattresses," said Philip Krim, CEO of The Merrick Group. "The feedback we've received from retailers has been overwhelmingly positive, so I am confident that the Playboy Mattress collection will be a success among consumers."

The Merrick Group focuses on memory foam beds and adjustable firmness air systems.

Carlitz said interest in the line is high. "The Playboy Mattress brand has already raised quite a few eyebrows among Top 100 and major regional furniture stores," he said. "Several of these major retailers have expressed interest and are waiting for the complete program to be unveiled this spring. Unique features will be applied to the beds."

While the initial offerings are conventional beds, a round bed is slated to join the Playboy mix later, he said.

Pretty sad for a porn company when one of their new touted items is a mattress while the other porn companies are touting 3D porn.

Maybe this idea would've flown in 2005. But now?! Good luck.

From a marketing standpoint, I'm surprised it hasn't happened sooner. There is a definite niche market among young women for things bearing the Playboy bunny logo. I'm thinking bartender, club scene girls etc.

Now if a player-type young guy invested in one of the Playboy mattreses, it might turn out to be a great pick-;up move.

But I think it would be mainly something that appeals more to the female set. Successful? We'll see.
