Yikes! Sorry you lost the $400 that you did but glad you got out without losing the other $600 too
You did NOT need to "escape" like that. The moment you sat down and was told $1,000, your correct response would have been "Wait, I was told $400. I'm not paying $1,000" - and you stand up to leave the area, with your wallet and all your cash still firmly in your pocket. At that point there is a possibility that they might back down and charge you only $400, and you can accept that if you want but even then the wiser move is to still cancel the VIP. Depending on whether the dancer and/or the security get hostile, you could stay and look for a less pushy dancer, or just get out of the club fast.
Always remember, if the VIP, or the LD for that matter, hasn't started yet, you have no obligation to pay anything. Once the dance starts at all, you have a lot weaker position and will probably have to pay, so if anything spooks, you, anything at all, take that moment before the dance to GTFO while you can. Maybe give the dancer a small tip if you want to smooth away potential hard feelings.
Other notes: leaving your phone was fortunate but what you REALLY should have left behind, always, is your credit card. Bring NO cards, nothing, just the total budget you want to spend, in cash. and that's it.
In my early years, I also had my bank lower my daily ATM withdrawal limit - protecting myself against myself, to prevent myself from spontaneously withdrawing more cash than I wanted to spend, until I learned more self control.
By admitting it was your first time there, you got yourself "special treatment" but you also exposed yourself an an easy mark.
Obviously, the time to avoid the whole situation was when the high pressure VIP sale started, but saying NO is a muscle you just have to build up through experience. The only way to get experience is with a safety net: a low cash budget and no CC. They can't steal money you don't have on you
You will learn. Good luck and good hunting!
Many thanks gentlemen!
@pgpatole, @8TM - I will plan to try both 390 and Atlantis, probably Atlantis first as it is much closer to me
@APBJ21 - Thanks, I had no idea about Detroit. Something to try out if I get a chance for maybe a weekend getaway
