The Russians are not that interested in taking territory quickly. They want to kill as many Ukrainian soldiers as possible while minimizing their own losses. Since Russia started the war with three times the population of the Ukraine, the Ukraine will run out of men first.

@docsavage They’re not suffering minimal losses. They’re suffering enormous losses. And they’re getting their asses kicked by Ukraine.

HuffPo or DailyKos might be a better place for this dumb virtue signal.

I am not an Ukraine lover but Russia deserves to lose this war. It is generally agreed upon that taking another countries territory against their will is a violation of international law. Putin is a thug and the Russian political system epitomizes tyranny. The Russians thought they could take Ukraine in 3 days and plunder their resources and subjugate their people. The Ukrainians have fought back hard and the future of the Russian state is in serious jeopardy. Russia deserves to lose this war and made an example of so that other countries don’t try the same thing.

If you study history you'll notice the thirty years war, and the hundred years war. Literally millions died. We're the only reason Russia didn't win after 3 days is because we kept supplying ukraine.

@Pussylicker2 Were the reason Russia invaded in the first place. Ukraine was an important country to Russia that was firmly within their sphere of influence. When we began encroaching Russia told us to knock it off. We didn’t. I seriously hope Ukraine “wins” and things return to the 1991 borders. But the USA is culpable in this whole debacle.

@nemesisk7 Ukraine is suffering. But if you had to pick a winner as of now, it would be Ukraine. Look what they’re accomplishing against all odds. And with a US president in Putin’s pocket.

The Nazis went through Ukraine, which is on the Russian border, to invade Russia. 27 million Russians died in the war. They want Ukraine as a land buffer, or at least not under the control of NATO (which is controlled the U.S.)

Even if Russia “wins” this war, they are still fucked. Ukraine is and will be fucked too. But that doesn’t change the fact that Russia will be having to deal with the catastrophic consequences of this for generations. All for a couple of bombed out oblasts in Eastern Ukraine.

Let’s see here what are going to be some of the lingering negative effects of Putins war of aggression:

  • Post Soviet stockpile of weapons fed into a wood chipper.
  • 1 Million plus casualties, probably more. Russia had lousy demographics before the war and this will make them worse. Paying out death benefits and paying for all the wounded vets hobbling around Russian cities is going to be a major drain on future Russian budgets.
  • Becoming indebted and beholden to China
  • A global pariah, Russians are seen as barbaric foreign invaders. Enjoy your vacation to Turkey or Thailand Ivan, because those are a handful of countries they are going to be able to travel to. Before the war Russians could travel to the EU relatively easily.
  • Their economy is not doing so well right now and Putin has had to raise interest rates and taxes to pay for the war. The war effort is eating up approximately 40 percent of GDP. If and when the war ends transitioning back to a normal economy is going to be brutal.
  • Fuel shortages. Ukraine has been blowing up refineries and oil infrastructure everywhere. Russia can no longer exported refined fuel products like Diesel and Jet fuel. This was a literal money printer for the Russian government before their excess refining capacity got taken offline.
  • A heavily armed and hostile Ukraine and reinvigorated Euro NATO members. Ukraine is going to hate Russia for generations and have the weapons to lay some serious hurt on them if they try anything. The Europeans have been rebuilding their militaries after years of neglect after what they saw Russia do.

These are just several things that came to my mind, and I am sure there are many more that Russia will have to grapple with regardless of the outcome of the war.

You could replace “Russia” with “USA” and “Ukraine” with “Iran” and most of your post would read the same.

@Hank Moody Hankov Moodyvich, I am not going to argue that the United States has made some really terrible decisions. The war with Iran is an epic blunder. And was brought on by our one sided relationship with “Our Greatest Ally”. But it’s still an Apples to Oranges comparison with Russia’s war.

The future of the Russian State is in serious jeopardy and they are being attacked every day now by Ukraine in places that they thought were untouchable. Life is going to be pretty shit for your average non-Oligarch Russian for at least a decade, if not longer once the dust finally settles.

The United States has tons of problems but your average citizen is pretty well fed and cozy. That is why no one is doing shit politically. Gas prices are higher and it is becoming increasingly more difficult for our government to finance its massive deficits. These are manageable problems compared to the shit heap that Russians and future Russian leaders are going to have to deal with.

Russia entered into a non-aggression pact with Germany; divided up Poland with Germany and in my opinion are a major cause of WW2. They deserved to have far, far, far more dead than they actually had. Fuck them. Fuck Ukraine who joined the Nazis as well.

As long as counties are willing to give hand outs to Ukraine, or sell them weapons using money from those hand outs to fund the war, and OTHER counties are still doing deals with Russia - China, Iran and now apparently us, this war will never end. It is a revenue generator for both sides.

I’m not interested in trying to understand global politics but this war just seems stupid from both sides. Both Russia and Ukraine have suffered enormous losses of life, destroyed cities and infrastructure, and spent billions - for what? In the end if its territory and a warm weather port Russia is after, they’ll realize they could have bought or leased it for a lot less than what they’ve spent on a fighting a war. This doesn’t even take into account what this war has cost the world economy, and the countries who are having to deal with the refugees, and whoever (likely US) is going to have to rebuild the cities and infrastructure destroyed by this meaningless war.
