A.I. Do You Use It?

I got into this deep discussion the other day with a customer, who said one of his friendly competitors keeps talking about AI, and it had this guy a little flipped out because he isn’t using it for anything. At the end of our discussion we couldn’t really find how AI is going to totally change his business at the moment. He always could use more customers but how does AI bring more customers through his door? Other than using AI to help is social media advertising we couldn’t think of anything else that was a game changer.

It got me thinking should I be using it? So far the only way I have figured it to help me is gathering more info on products I sell but I haven’t tried that experiment yet. Maybe I could use it to help plan my day and make it more efficient? Those really aren’t game changers either.

I love to gamble and have attempted to use AI to develop betting models but it always winds up a disaster. AI always ends up getting confused by screwing up dates and forgetting past results which then requires too much babysitting by me. At that point I spend too much time making sure it’s not giving me bogus information instead of focusing on the original goal, just give me the best educated guess of who’s going to win based on the data I feed it.

My wife has some coworkers who compose emails entirely made up from AI. They have often got burned because they’re too lazy to do thorough proofreading or put it in their own words and have been called out multiple times. One time a coworkers had to send en email out saying an employee no longer worked there. He was fired for insubordination and everyone else knew it and was mad because he was doing some bad things (simplest way I can put it). Of course the email couldn’t say he was fired so AI made the departure sound complimentary and wished the just fired employee best wishes in his future. Other workers were furious that they got an email complementing and well wishing someone who just got fired. All the employee recalled needed was to say “John Doe no longer works here,” instead they AI and the employee screwed it all up because the employee for some reason thought they needed to go beyond just stating a fact.

I still wonder if this is another stupid fad or something that’s really going to bring change down the road. Most analysts think the world is going to look very different possibly as soon as the end of the decade due to AI and how much better our lives will be. Some other analysts legitimately believe it will kill us all one day too.

I mean in 1980 did you think in 2026 people could just shove a needle in their body and lose weight without having to do anything? Did you think most states would have legal marijuana? Those have nothing to do with AI but it just shows how drastically things can change over time.

What has been your experience?

AI is a tool, and can be very manipulative. It reflects what it finds on other servers to make responses, and how the creators have shaped it. The old adage of computer programming still holds: Garbage in, Garage out. It is happening and won't stop. Take a listen to some of the "ALL In" podcasts that cover AI. It really provides a good discussion for it and also the problems.

AI is here to stay. Data response prejudice can potentially be very subtle - that is the scary thing with subjective queries. AI can't process or analyze the way or speed of the human brain.

I definitely don't use AI for writing. I consider writing one of my skills. It helps me order my thoughts.

And when I hear about Facebook employees being forced to let AI "look over their shoulders" as they work so it can learn their jobs and eventually replace them - that makes me want to shun AI in all aspects.

I am so stubborn that I won't even watch a Youtube video with a computer generated voice over. You can't find a human to read for you for a little bit of nothing?

I personally resent having things crammed down my throat.

It will be a strange mix in the future. Jobs like delivery room nurses are not going to be replaced by AI. But my Nurse Practitioner wants to use AI to take my clinical notes as we speak. She asked me for permission to record our conversation, but she did not specify the recorder would be AI. I figured it out later. I have to say the damn thing took excellent notes. But the fact that she mislead me about what was going on means I will not give her permission to do that again.

Definitely use AI for work. It's a great tool for repetitive tasks, or searching for patterns in data.

I feel like the more your profession is ruled by people who love buzzwords and checklists, the more useful AI is. I am currently in a work situation where thankfully my direct supervisors aren’t so bad with that nonsense, but the job as a whole enjoys buzzwords like a beehive and therefore AI chat bots are very useful for some things.

I do hear about potential future applications like humanoid robots that may end up like the equivalent of a full time maid or a full time home healthcare worker. That would be pretty cool.

In the short term, Reddit and YouTube have definitely been less enjoyable to hang out on. It makes me wonder whether I should join a book club or something and go back to reading books like I did more often as a child.

It's getting pretty good. That spencer pratt commercial was AI? That thing looked like a movie. No I don't use it yet though.

My workplace doesn’t allow AI usage yet. But I can see how some of it can be useful.

The work that I do is fairly niche. At some point me and a co-worker were messing around using AI on our phones and asked it to explain a process we do for work. The response was only 50% accurate. It was good enough for a birds eye view, explanation, but missed many important details.

At another point i needed a medical justification letter for something. Usually an MD or a therapist writes these. However, these take time and sometimes the writer forgets or omits important details. Anyhow, I’ve asked ChatGPT to draft something. It spit out 5 pages in seconds. I’ve proofread it, spent about an hour making edits and then sent it to my MD. The MD took the text, stuck it on his letterhead and sent back to me. I’ve submitted it and it was accepted by the insurance.

This was all using the free versions of ChatGPT. I hear the paid ones are way better these days.

Speaking of YouTube, yes there is so much AI slop on it, it’s not even funny anymore. I’ve seen some pretty convincing videos, and then like 10 min in, you start hearing AI slurred or slowed down voice. Or weird things on screen. For example this one video I’m watching, and the door frame behind the guys head is crooked.

NO but I do read some of it. Yesterday I read an AI forecast for the 2028 presidential election. Newson will represent the democrats and JD Vance the republicans and Vance wins by a large margin.

I use it daily. We have our own in house platform so all client information remains privileged. One of our IT guys said AI is about as smart as a well trained dog, it just processes everything at such an unbelievable rate.

Question: I've noticed a shit-ton of emails now begin with, "I hope this message finds you well." Is that an indication that AI was used, or is it just a fad, people writing that? Either way I find it annoying, it's so fuckin phony.

We used to go to a travel agent. Now I can use AI at home and run several scenarios and even look for convenient times to leave and efficient pricing along with suggested things to do when I am there. I don’t want to be swayed by a travel agent any more to go in a certain direction because they are incentivized to sell you a package. I like to customize to my preferences which AI can cater to my specifics.

Also use AI to help with DIY projects around the house. It’s awesome.

I get wage analysis data on Chat GPT in 10 seconds that it used to take an analyst 2 days to compile and summarize.

I use it to compose letters, elevator pitches, SME presentations, Letters of Intent, CVs for our physicians and nurses, job ads, speakers' bureaus, and more. You have to know what you are asking for and be specific in where you ask it to pull information from.

If you are running a day full of errands or a road trip with several different stops, you can even have it plan your route for speed, miles travelled, or fuel efficiency. It's pretty awesome.

No, I believe AI is incompatible with jobs and the planet
