New club or new name?

When a club closes and then reopens under a different name should you submit an edit to change the club name or submit a new club listing? If you change the name you keep the reviews. If you add a new club you lose the reviews.

Good question.
I can see arguments on both sides. You are correct about the benefits of keeping the link to historical reviews, but if the management changes along with the name of the club, then the club can be very different than it was in prior reviews, hopefully better.

Is there a compromise? Change the name, retain the historical reviews and add a "formerly known as......" to the revised name on the listing?

If most of the previous dancers were going to be there, the reviews under the old name would probably still be helpful. If it's mostly different dancers, it's probably going to be very different from what older reviews would say.

The historical reviews are usually meaningless after a club changes its name. The address remains the same, but the club can be very different and the clientele can be different, too. In other words, there was a reason for the name change.

I think there needs to be a way of permanently identifying a review with a club name at the time the review is submitted. That way, should the club change its name (with or without a management change), someone reading the review would then know the review was for a different club at the same location. This could be accomplished with an edit to the club name.

When I've posted a club rename, founder has asked to post as a new club.

Funny. When I posted as a new club, it was rejected. Instead my review of the new club was added as a review in the old thread only with the new name. Not that it matters ... His board. His decisions.

I would say be consistent. The Pony here in Indianapolis has a low number of reviews because the old reviews were not carried over when ownership changed. Jiggles has a lot of reviews because the reviews were carried over when ownership changed. This might give the impression that the Pony is unpopular compared to Jiggles because of its lower number of reviews for anyone who does not know the history of the clubs.

Maybe a club with a new name could have its own listing but with a link to the old club's reviews, maybe linking through the addresses?

In Ronkonkoma, NY a club is identified as The Landing Strip (was Forbidden Fruit) and has a good number of reviews. It seems the club is popular, but that's not certain without knowing whether a review is for the new club or the old club?

@WiseToo: I’ve been there a fair number of times over the years. Under both names. I don’t recall exactly when the name changed, but it occurred pre-COVID. I didn’t notice any other changes with the club besides the sign out front.
