It's still too early to tell what the long term effects of Trump will be. He brings unpredictability to the market which has caused huge fluctuations, but nothing that can't be undone. A year from now is when the Republican party will know if they're in real trouble, or looking good for the midterm election.

It wouldn't be too hard to come up with a comprehensive tariff policy that Trump could announce with Bernie Sanders, AOC, and a few Democrat governors standing next to him for the photo op. But it would likely be tariffs that would kick in after months or years of delay, maybe in phases, to give the private sector time to adapt.

Some of the biggest problems are to do huge inequality. Democrats want to raise the minimum wage and while Republicans don't want to raise the minimum wage or get rid of it entirely. Republicans are now trying to pass huge tax cuts for the super rich while cutting Medicaid and other things that lower income people rely on. It's hard to think that Republicans would improve inner cities by making the rich richer and the poor poorer which is exactly what they are proposing to do. It makes people more desperate when they feel like the system is rigged against them.
