I grew up with the understanding that, subject to certain exceptions, the Cuban government either prohibited emigration from the island or made it extremely difficult. Is this still true? If so, is the exorbitant expense really evidence of trafficking or is the cost of doing business with corrupt government officials?

It would be zero fun, hearing a full, honest account of what it's like to cross multiple borders illegally to get to North Mexico, and then get into the US. It used to be wet foot dry foot for Cubans. If you made it into the us, you got papers. It's more complicated now, but I think Cubans still get preferential treatment.
I speak Spanish and am tangentially involved in some of these issues. Right now the common path is flight from Cuba to northern Mexico, there they frequently get papers from the cartels and then over the boarder into hasten as a first landing. The price i head from a couple different people, one who I think is reliable. I was just surprised at the cost. 15 years ago it was 7000 from Guatemala to the US. Now I'm hearing 25k, I didn't expect 50, but it may be true.

What I've heard is they have typically flown to Nicaragua, because it's easy to get a visa for Nicaragua. Then they have to travel by land to the US Mexico border. They typically request an appointment with immigration at the border, request a admission to the US, then wait to be admitted, then go into detention and wait to be released.
