Breathe, breathe in the air
Maybe I’m wrong but I thought wildcards were given to either young players that didn’t quite meet the requirements or seasoned professionals that were still in their prime but for various reasons tumbled down the world rankings?

In American football it’s a team that makes the playoffs without winning a division usually refers to a first or second runner up is given a wild card spot in the playoffs

Even as a fan of soccer, I never considered that the concept of a wild card would be different to a Brit. Makes sense as the Premier League champion is decided by season league play rather than an end of season playoff. I guess the closest equivalent to a US wild card team would be the 2d thru 4th place EPL teams who get Champions League spots.

I think wild cards are good in some sports. In baseball you could win over 100 games and not go to the playoffs back in the day when it was East winner vs West winner and whoever from that goes to the World Series.

How about 43 years of age tennis players ranked 530 in the world that has not won a Grand Slam event for 15 years?

I can stream some international television stations. Generally I don’t watch anything - but I have tuned in for some sports like the Tour de France and the The Open (golf).

I enjoy watching the commercials. Except for the weird accent of the actors 😊 and different brands, one almost wouldn’t notice a difference between America and the UK.

I used to think we were different but then I watch the commercials and we are all the same.

But then I read about words that have a totally different meaning. I love this kind of stuff.

@londonguy

That’s what we’d call a long shot or maybe a dark horse.

Play “Follow The Queen” as wildcard using 3 in the hole (down cards) and 4 up cards to do the following. Most realistic poker game resembling how life goes, because you just never know how quickly things can change. You can go from having an excellent hand to crap with one flip of the card.

Venus Williams was issued a “wildcard” exemption to allow her to play in the US Open (tennis) despite her being over 40 and 500+ in the world rankings

The organisers of the U.S. Open should be ashamed of themselves giving a wildcard to Venus Williams. I’m sure there are many young American girls in their early stages of their tennis careers who would love the chance to experience playing instead of giving it to a has been like Williams. Williams herself should be ashamed too.
