History is littered with fallen empires. Eventually, the cost of maintaining an empire becomes greater than any benefits derived from it, and it goes into a decline. An empire also often goes along with a bread and circuses welfare state at home, and this then speeds up the decline even more.
The founders of this country knew their history and tried to implement a limited government with brakes in place to keep it from mutating into an empire. It worked for a couple hundred years, but nothing lasts forever. Since nothing lasts forever, the decline won't last forever either. I'm 67 and probably won't be around when things start getting better but it may be better again for our grandchildren someday. At least, I hope so.
The Mighty Roman Empire: an ever expanding/ever trying to expand empire. Wealth and capital flowed, the treasury would grow exponentially….until it didn’t. The cost to maintain the numerous places of expansion/influence/attempted places of expansion certainly never stopped growing. But the people of the great empire’s Capitol loved war! They fortunately would know war at home very infrequently - to them war was something fought in far away places against lesser people. The empire would see great leaders of state and war…until it didn’t. Then it would see figureheads, some of feeble mind and physical ability that the powerful could control. The treasury was becoming far beyond broke though the powerful individuals’ wealth would continue to expand. Fortunately the empire was very very good at keeping up a constant supply of bread and circuses - shiny objects — to keep those of Rome arrogant in their ignorant bliss. Unfortunately for the empire, the arrogance based on its past success and its gigantic financial operations, and machinations, made it’s clearly downward trajectory unable to be stopped. Ironically, if a leader came along to try to stop it, it would be numerous citizens of Rome who would keep that change from happening.
That’s a brief and generic picture but it’s generally correct. So if you read it yet don’t see any parallels to today, I highly recommend you consider cutting back on your bread and circuses.
