5+ hour Uber ride

new city, new club
Gonna share this story and hopeful that some of you other poor bastards can assure me that you've gone to similar lengths in the name of fun.

I flew into Los Angeles for work on Monday thru Wednesday. Decided to add another day to my trip to spend 24 hours in Tijuana before flying home. Booked a rental car starting on Wednesday with the plan to park it at the border and return it at the San Diego airport for my return flight home.

Arrived at the rental car place and they said that they wouldn't have a car for me for two hours. So, I cancelled the $80 one way, 24 car rental and booked a $103 Uber down to the border. The 90 minute drive was smooth - nice driver and light traffic. We get to about 5 minutes north of the border and I reach in my bag for passport and.....FUCK!!

I had locked my passport in the safe in my hotel back south of LA and forgot to grab it when I checked out that morning. I called the hotel it was still there along with a wad of cash (lucky!!). The uber driver drove my ass all the way back up to my hotel and then back down to the border. What a waste of time and money. I was more pissed about the lost time than what ended up being a $253 Uber ride.

Some of you may say, fuck that, dude should have bailed. But.....I had already booked my hotel in Tijuana and was flying out of San Diego the next day so basically had to get down there anyway. Zero regrets. Great time in TJ.

Sometimes you just get on a mission and have to keep going. I'd like to say that I have never done something like that. But then I would be lying. When you smell pussy, you do crazy things.

Hate to sound like a dick - but when you’re traveling to a foreign country you need a check list and a passport would be … let’s just say “fairly high” on the list of things in your possession before departing.

@caprainfun

It can happen to anyone that is not used to put things in the hotel safe, and also is so horny with anticipation to get to The Happiest Place on Earth (according to Krusty)

I hope you learn from this experience and next time you won’t forget to check your thong before checking out from the hotel.

In any case I am glad you have “Zero regrets”

Since you wrote and I quote:

“Great time in TJ”

Pics and Vids or it didn’t happen.

:D

That's actually a really good deal. I've had uber try to charge $104 for 10 miles in Vegas. Like $75 to go to a club in LA... I skip those rob prices

$103 from LA to the border?

Damn that sounds like a deal.

I’ve spent that just going to dinner and back in some big cities and the round trip was under 10 miles!

I left $2k in a hotel safe once and didn’t realize it til I was boarding my flight. Luckily, one of our group was still in town and able to swing by the hotel. The staff had no problem getting it from the safe and handing it to him. Ha. They didn’t even need the combination. Lesson learned. I compulsively check the safe every time I leave a hotel room, even if I didn’t put anything in it.

@warrior yep, I had my eyes on the prize. Rational thought is elusive once that committed.

@motorhead passport was in hotel safe, not left at home.

To all who commented on the $103 Uber ride from LA to the border - I agree it could have been a LOT worse. It was actually from the John Wayne airport so closer than LA too. Also the balance of the ride was a side deal in cash between driver and me. Otherwise it would have been a lot more so I got lucky there as well.

@jimmy, yeah the hotel can open any safe. Guessing with a master key or magic combo that is unique to their property. Sounds like you had the same good luck as me that no one got their mitts on our $$ before we came to our senses.

One time before covid work took me to Chula Vista and I decided to jump over the border to go to my favorite club. but I didn't have my passport with me. I had to explain to the Mexican customs official who then took me into the back room to talk to his boss... I showed him my driver's license... he said 'next time bring your passport'. and with that he let me go on into Tijuana. no charge and no problem (thank goodness!!)

“@motorhead passport was in hotel safe, not left at home”

Fair enough, we all have occasional brain farts. I only have a 10 minute commute to work but I need my phone to log into my computer and I’m patting my pockets 3 times before I walk out the door to make sure I have my stuff. But I’m OCD

@jascoi that’s wild that they let you in and then that you didn’t have a problem re-entering the US without it. I had my global entry/Sentri card on me but didn’t want to take a chance on seeing if that could suffice for entry or re-entry.

I once left $5000 in cash in the safe at Mirage and I was all the way home to Canada before I realized it. The hotel staff and security had opened the safe for the next guest and had the money waiting for me on my next arrival a couple months later.

Sentri is a fully acceptable substitute for passport when doing a land crossing. You only need passport for air.

That’s an amazing service experience from the Mirage @623. Not sure I would have been so trusting about letting it sit there between visits.

I should add that I was with colleagues drinking late the night before and only got about three hours of sleep so definitely was not firing on all cylinders when I checked out.

Thanks all the reassurances that you guys have made similar f ups over time.

Good to know @funontheside. I googled it but was getting inconclusive answers on government sites so just took the much more laborious path of taking the ride back up and down to get my passport. Next time!
