Bloomberg got his ass handed to him during the debate

rickdugan
Verified and Certifiable Super-Reviewer
I'm not normally one to use melodrama statements, but it's hard to use a less descriptive title for what happened on that stage last night. Simply put, they carved him up like a Thanksgiving turkey. He was stiff, defensive and dismissive. He looked utterly unprepared, able to do little more than respond with a series of canned statements while they attacked him unceasingly and rather cleverly at times.

It was a performance reminiscent of Rubio's in a debate before the 2016 Republican New Hampshire primaries, where Trump and Christie beat him up so badly that all he could do was revert to canned statements, which Christie then also mocked him for doing. It essentially ended Rubio's candidacy. Now Bloomberg probably won't go down so easily, but that performance had to have hurt him.

I watched the debate and Liz Warren took a chainsaw to what's left of Bloomberg's geriatric balls. You can tell Bloomberg isn't used to be talked to that way.

It doesn't help the Democratic party though; it only helps Trump. Although Bloomberg is very gifted at creating TV ads and you should never underestimate the stupidity of the average voter.

@RM and CMI: I agree that it was very apparent that he wasn't used to being talked to like that.

He's just been so powerful for so long that he's surrounded by yes men. In fact, he is even more insulated than most billionaires because he's not answerable to either investors or government entities since Bloomberg LP is both privately held and largely unregulated.

Now normally a centrist candidate like him would take some heat from left wing activist groups, but even they've been keeping their mouths shut because he's such a big charitable donor to so many of them.

It must have really felt like an arctic blast on bare skin for him to leave his cocoon and be exposed to people making fun of him and leveling insults and accusations at him. Welcome to the Big League of politics and the real world, lol.

I don't think the debates matter. Voting is a visceral act in the US. People will be swayed by last minute tv ads if anything. Most will simply vote along party linea while as usual the majority of the public will abstain from voting.

Also remember that the rich don't go against their aelf interests. But the average American almost always does.

If Bloomberg had done well, he would have been well-positioned to take votes away from other so-called moderates, giving Bernie real competition. Now, it looks like Bernie will enter the convention with a solid lead. Then, it’s up to party leaders to decide whether to change the rules to ( once again) steal the nomination from Bernie. Pop the popcorn. It’s getting fun.

I agree with people above saying Bloomberg looked like 'who are these people talking to me like this.' I'm interested for him to take the gloves off, he left too many opportunities on the table to talk back i.e. 'Dont act all high and mighty Pocohantas, by lying on your college application you could've very well taken away an opportunity from a female minority.'

  • CC99
    @Evasparkling

You seem to be under the impression I am a Bernie supporter? All I'm doing is relaying factual information.

Most Democrats are not centrists. Actual centrists would identify as "independents." Very few people are true "centrists" though as almost everybody claims to lean towards the Democrat or Republican party. Being a centrist would indicate that you literally have no preference for either one.

    https://news.gallup.com/poll/15370/party…

Rather most of what we call "centrists" are people that I would call "centre-left" or "centre-right." A lot of people certainly claim to be centrists because they think it makes them look more objective but if you go way down the list on the link I provided above it showed that only about 8-12% of the population claims to not lean either way.

I have a strong feeling though that anyone who would actually go so far as to identify themselves with "I am a Democrat!" Or "I am a Republican!" Is very likely to be solidly on that party's side as a lot of people, in my experience, are hesitant towards identifying with a political party even if they agree with them on a lot of things.
  • CC99
So I guess according to the above data, between 25-30% of the population is solidly Republican, 25-30% is solidly Democrat. 15-20% is centre-left, 15-20% is centre right, and 8-12% are true centrists.
  • mark94
I don’t think left and right have much meaning these days. Trump has turned the traditional political alignments on their heads. Some of his positions, like protecting the working man, come from the traditional Democrat playbook ( which they abandoned ).

Terms like nationalist, globalist, populist, and socialist are more relevant to defining political alignment than the tired terms left and right. I also don’t think liberal and conservative are as relevant as they once were. In fact, I’m not sure the party of Trump can be said to be Republican. It’s an odd mix of supporters from both sides that may evaporate when Trump is gone.

It would be difficult to predict if you don't understand liberals. Maybe not this specific debate performance, but I knew as soon as his campaign took off that he was going to be very unpopular among liberals. The amount of money he is throwing at this campaign is all gonna be wasted even if he throws a billion dollars towards advertising.

A lot of liberals are very idealistic people. Many of them refused to vote for Hillary because they perceived her as a corporate shill trying to buy her way into the white house and having no real convictions of her own.

Mike Bloomberg is Hillary on steroids. He's not even trying to hide the fact that he's attempting to buy the white house. And on top of that, he can't even play the woman card or the minority card. The only reason Hillary got any true supporters is because she was a woman. Pretty much all the other votes she received were protest votes against Donald Trump. But Bloomberg doesn't even have the woman thing going for him.

As far as Bloomberg goes, a lot of liberals don't consider him a real liberal. They consider him a corporate billionaire with no convictions trying to buy the white house. A lot of liberals would find it really difficult to make themselves vote for somebody like that. A lot of them will probably be more comfortable with the idea of Trump winning than Bloomberg because at least with Trump, you can tell yourself that the reason he won was because his support base loves him. With Bloomberg, if you elect him, you are literally sending a message saying that huge amounts of wealth can effortlessly buy political power which is something the Bernie supporters hate. The only votes he would receive in a general election is "I don't want Donald Trump" votes and that didn't work for Hillary so I doubt it would work for Bloomberg.

Yesterday on MSNBC, James Carville said that 2/3 of Dems are either liberal or very liberal and that Bernie correctly calculated that all he needs to do is win the majority of this 2/3 to get the nomination. Meanwhile, Biden needed to get 100% of the other 1/3, which won’t happen.

  • mark94

The box the Dems are in can be traced back to a party which uses identity politics to win races. They once had a solid base of the working class and the poor. Republicans were a minority party of the wealthy. As the Dems carved the electorate up into smaller and smaller groups of victims, they ignored their original base. Reagan took advantage of this and so has Trump.

I have no doubt that Republicans will misread this and fail to hold their advantage post-Trump. But, for the next 5 years, Dems are screwed. I doubt they will learn their lessons either.

In his own mind, I wouldn’t be surprised if Bernie knew he was unelectable. But, he’s enjoying the fame, power, and influence from being the nominee.
