money was invented for handing to women, but buying dances is a chump's game

Stephan Hoeller says that the name Theosophy started with Ammonius Saccas. He was a teacher of Plotinus, but did not write anything himself. I have much more to learn.

So wanting to remedy my educational deficiency, where do I start reading?

How about this, 242 pages. An introduction to ancient philosophy / A.H. Armstrong ( 1983)

amazon.com

Yes, looks outstanding, many editions, goes all the way back to the Pre-Socratics, and covers all that flowed out, including Neo-Platonism, and Augustinian Medieval.

@SJG Theosophy, Ammonius Saccas and Plotinus all sound like pipe-smokers. And watch your back when you're around Stephan Hoeller.
