Deep throat

The local cable rebroadcast a documentary “Inside Deep Throat”. It had a lot of interviews with the people involved with the film and the impact on their lives, and the impact the film had on the porno industry and the changing social values. It really was one of the first explicit adult movies that made the crossover to general release. If you don’t know the story, the male star was convicted under the existing obscenity laws and would have done jail time if it hadn’t been reversed. This would have a chilling effect on the whole porno industry.
The other thing that saved the industry was the release of VCR’s, which allowed porn to be viewed at home. This had a detrimental effect on the “adult” movie theaters, but allowed the explosion of the video market.
I remember seeing it on a twin bill with “The devil in Miss Jones “ in the mid-70’s. Pretty daring stuff for those days and times.
Political joke of the time. Why did President Nixon go see Deep Throat twice? He wanted to get it down pat! (His wife’s name was Pat.)
Any of the other oldsters remember seeing it in a theater?

How about "Behind the Green Door" with Marilyn Chambers, the Ivory Snow girl?

Interracial, blow jobs, multiple simultaneous partners, bondage....that movie pretty much had it all.

Never seen Deep Throat - was it ever released on VCR? I assume it would be rather mild by the standards of 1980s and beyond porn.

A bit of Deep Throat trivia. As I understand it, "Deep's" leading lady's abusive husband used to live 3 houses away from us in S. Florida when I was a youngster. I don't recall him, but knew his father. He was 12 years older than me, so easily could have been gone before I would even remember him. His father raised birds and my mother got some of them from him.

The memory I have of porn going mainstream was a movie called I Am curious Yellow it was in theaters about the same time as Easy Rider I believe it was the late 1960s or very early 1970s
BTW the star of Deep Throat her name was Linda Lovelace came out and said she was trafficked a number of years ago I remember something about her commiting suicide.

She didn't commit suicide, she was taken off life support after a bad car accident.

Aren't most porn actresses victims of sex trafficking?

I don't know if this film was the one involved, but as I remember, about this time, there was a supreme court case involving porn and free speech. Some of the member attorneys will know more than me. Anyway, one of the justices said that he couldn't define smut, but could tell it if he sees it. Before that, all porn was on 8mm or 16mm film. Very grainy and almost unwatchable, and I always remember that it was illegal to have. I also don't know if that was actually true. Again some of the local attorneys can weigh in on that.

^^^^I don't know if it was ever illegal to have porn (so long as the participants were adults), but if so, I think that would call for a bloody revolution.
Porn certainly has come a long way since I was a kid in the 70s, when I was introduced to it by a friend whose dad had an amazing collection of porn mags. I remember the American mags, like Playboy and others, didn't compare to the raunch he imported from Europe. That was some great shit.Just goes to show how far advanced Europe was, and still is, in matters of sex and porn, than the USA, with its holier-than-thou evangelicals and politicians who secretly pay for sex and molest boys and who knows what else.

X rated theaters has closed by the time I had a driver's license. But in the mid 1980s I can remember being a teenager, my parents dropping me off the video arcade in the same run down shopping center, and wondering what was in there.

Papi,

I went with a couple of co-workers to see it at some "theater", I believe it was on the beach. Didn't pay that much attention as I wasn't driving.

Why do I sometimes hear deep throat talked about as a porn film and other times as something relating to richard nixon?

But never about richard nixon starring in a porn film lol!
