OT: Media Hypocricy on Immigration

Itsmytime
I’ve had enough and I can’t take it any more
I’m not a big fan of Trump but understand the frustration people feel by the media’s hypocrisy.

“Protect children” vs “Abortion rights”.

“Child protective services should take the kids because mom let them play by themselves in the park” vs “Parents drag their kids (well, maybe their kids) for thousands of miles exposing them to gangs, guns, drugs and starvation but our government should not enforce the law when they illegally cross our border”.

Clinton, Bush and Obama do it, but Trump does it and the media explodes.

Roseanne sends an obnoxious tweet and her career is history. Fonda sends an obnoxious tweet and he’s forgiven.

I say, let the women in, put them on the stage. If they earn enough to want to stay let them stay. Later on her husband can come to mow my lawn. Kids can stay with the grand parents until they’re old enough to come work.

I love immigrants. They tolerate a lot for the future generations.

Yeah, there's a lot of hypocrisy, on both sides and on every single issue.

In 2007 Barack Obama helps to kill immigration reform in the Senate, and he votes to reduce chain migration and to phase out Bush's proposed guest worker program (as a favor to labor unions who opposed immigration reform). The media doesn't seem to care at the time. But Trump announces virtually the same thing, and the media implies that he's a monster.

In 2008 Barack Obama says he wants to renegotiate Nafta, and the media describes him as a champion of American workers. Trump now says the same thing, and the media implies that he's a moron who doesn't understand economics and that American workers will suffer as a result.

In 2008, the rapper Ludacris, while supporting Obama, raps that Hillary Clinton is an "irrelevant bitch," that Bush is mentally handicapped, and that John McCain belongs in a wheelchair. Once again, no one gives a shit. But various Trump supporters say similar things... which of course means that Trump is the worst plague to ever happen to our civilization.

In 2009 Obama increases troop levels in Afghanistan to over 100,000, while also attempting to keep us in Iraq beyond Bush's deadline for withdrawal... and he receives a Nobel peace prize. But Trump talks tough with our enemies, and that of course makes him a warmonger.

In 2012, Obama is caught on a hot-mic telling Dmitri Medvedev that he will have more flexibility to assist Putin and Russia after the election... and once again, no one cares. But everyone knows that Trump is a Russian double-agent, right?

There's also plenty of bullshit on the other side, too:

Obama negotiates with Cuba and Iran, and Sean Hannity says he's kowtowing to our enemies. Trump negotiates with North Korea, and Hannity says that Trump is a hero.

Obama is accused of moral relativism by Fox news for implying that America has done some bad things in the past. But Trump says that Putin and Kim Jong Un are strong leaders who love their people, and that other countries (including America) have blood on their hands, too... and Fox News doesn't seem to care.

Obama says he supports background checks for gun buyers, prompting the NRA to claim that Obama wants to take our guns away... in fact, the NRA didn't even want to talk to Obama. But Trump says the exact same thing - and then he even supports banning "bump stocks" - and the NRA calls Trump a hero and invites him to speak at their convention.

Obama is criticized by Fox News for using a teleprompter. Trump is praised by Fox News for using a teleprompter. (Sean Hannity says it makes Trump seem more presidential.)

Obama supports a system of tax subsidies to purchase private medical insurance, while expanding Medicaid, and the Republican Party calls him a socialist. Trump says he supports actual socialized medicine and says it's working well in foreign countries... and the Republican Party nominates him for president.

You can always count on @Burlington to write a 3000 word essay, ramble in 10 directions, and miss all the key points. You could call it "death by Google search."

It's not hypocrisy on Trump's part this is very intentional, he just exposed his true colors. His base agrees with him, shows who his base really is.

@RandomMember,

This thread is about the media demonstrating hypocrisy about Trump's immigration policies, etc. I just took it a step further and listed all the political/media hypocrisy I could think of on both sides. I didn't use a Google search - these were just the things I could remember from the last few election cycles. How exactly did I miss the key points?

I will stick to the facts and continue to feel for Kate Steinle's parents and that 1000s of other American Citizen parents who have been permanently separated from their children at the hands of CRIMINALS who illegally crossed the border.

@JackAstor,

I don't get it. Which part of my comment are you responding to? And what is your response?

@JackAstor,

I don't see how Obama's "junior varsity" remark demonstrates hypocrisy. You may disagree with it but that doesn't make it hypocritical

Well I know I'm not in favor of the democrats open borders policy that Hillary wanted. Why even have a border or country if you let anyone just come in? I guess if the democrats win and enact open borders, I may be forced to buy a gun to defend myself from criminals or possibly have to join in a civil war. I hope that doesn't happen. I like living in the most peaceful country on Earth. I would hate it if they let lots of criminal Mexican gangs just take over. As far as immigration goes, if they follow our laws, I'm ok with it. Crossing the border illegally is not legal. Millions do it legally. If the ones who did it illegally are otherwise following our laws and can help pay taxes to pay social security and other taxes, I would let them. Dropping the income limit for Social security taxes was about the only thing I agreed with Hillary on that I know of. Maybe if we give a path to citizenship for illegals by charging them higher social security and Medicare taxes for 20 years, it would deter illegal immigration and help everyone.

@orionsmith lets be real clear here, no one wants open borders, both sides want control of the border crossings and both sides want people only to come in at designated border entry points, so lets stop the bullshit talking points.
This discussion revolves around Trump's attempts to ram a border wall down the throat of the American people, after he promised we wouldn't end up paying for it, that's the issue that is being negotiated here, he is trying to trick everyone into a hundred billion dollar boondoggle, the rest of this fucking debate is just noise, anybody that doesn't recognize this fact (yes it's a fact) is stupid.

@twentyfive,

I'm not sure orionsmith is rational. He said we may need a civil war over immigration. He also said that America is the most peaceful country on earth. I mean, we're pretty great, but are we really more peaceful than New Zealand? LOL

@orionsmith,

There's a lot of kooky stuff in your post, but I'll try to ignore the silly distractions. Let me just say this: we let in between 20,000 and 165,000 Mexican immigrants legally every year, with the numbers varying based on several factors. Meanwhile, there are between 1.5 million and 2 million Mexicans who are on a waiting list to come here legally. You do the math. If you were a Mexican, and your kids are starving, and you're dodging gunfire from drug cartels, what would you do? Would you patiently wait in line?

^your logic is good but right now the immediate problem is not Mexicans, it’s El Salvadorans, Guetemalians, and to a lesser extent, Venezuelans coming in at the southern crossings.

My post was partly sarcastic. Who believes this country is the most peaceful?

As far as open borders, I read that Hillary and several democrats want that. Could be fake news. Might not.
I haven't watched the tv news very much so I may not know what's going on. As far as a civil war goes, that was part sarcastic too, I believe most Amerucans are too lazy or too busy to want to go fight to defend whatever they believe especially if they are comfortable with jobs and busy with going out to eat, a family, going out to strip clubs, etc.

The most serious part of my post was the idea requiring illegals to pay extra taxes over 20 years as a deterrent to illegal immigration while shoring up the entitlement programs.

If we have 2 million available jobs that regular Americans don't want but legal Mexicans are willing to do and they are willing to pay extra taxes, I would set up visa or worker programs and let them in with restrictions and required training to learn English and our laws. I don't know if we have 2 million vacant jobs available though. If Trump actually succeeds in boosting jobs, we will need lots of immigrants.

I will let you guys debate whatever you want. I do t have much time to keep posting here.

@orionsmith,

Ok, but if you ask them to pay *extra* taxes, that would actually encourage illegal immigration and discourage legal immigration. As it is, the system of minimum wages and bureaucratic red tape already discourages people from doing it the legal way. Why pile on more? Besides, if they were guest workers, they could pay taxes and then go back home without even necessarily working long enough to collect social security benefits. Doesn't that sound like a better plan?

@twentyfive,

Good point. I don't know the exact statistics for these other countries, but I do know that most Latin American countries effectively have a five to twenty year waiting list to immigrate legally. And most of these people can't afford to wait that long. Venezuelans and Nicaraguans used to get in easier due to refugee status, but that status is now in flux.
