Stopped by the bank today and asked whether they had any new $1s. Nope. I asked how often they come in. The response? "We haven't had any new since a bunch of $5s last June." Then the teller reached in her drawer and said she had new $2s, but they were special ordered and are awaiting pickup by someone.
I wonder whether this is routine or the Treasury is keeping the same bills in circulation longer due to budget cutbacks or something?
Foiled yet again in my efforts to take the gals some new, clean bills!
CTQWERTY,
My son in college has a part time job working as a teller in a bank. He told me about the time a young, attractive blond girl came in, wanted to pay her Visa bill, and asked him to look up her balance. He told her (it was around $300) and she reached into her purse and pulled out a stack of $1s. Paid the bill in cash, in singles. My son wondered what kind of job she had that she would have some many dollar bills. I told him she was probably a waitress.
That's some quick thinking, Steve! Today's bank stop was at my usual location, and had the same "acquired taste" teller working. I didn't pause long enough to invite her curiosity about why I'd want $100 in singles ... and fortunately my eyes didn't droop when talking to her. I do have half a mind to order up some $2s for my next visit to Silk. I think that's one of the rare places something like that (tipping with $2s) would work. CT
Maybe they are getting ready to release a new $1 bill? I don't think that the $1 coin thing ever took off...people just collected them.
Some new Chase ATMs have a feature where you can deposit money into your account by sliding in bills like a vending machine. They had to make a limit so you can only deposit 50 bills at a time. I started to wonder if they made this limit because of strippers and their collection of $1 bills.
Just hit the bank, albeit a different branch from my usual. I asked about ordering some $2s and the clerk said they had some. When she came back, it was a bundle of 100 for $200. I remarked about the $1s I'd had lately being in poor shape, and she said "I know... we've been getting a lot of ones in bad shape." The benefit on the twos? They're brand new!
