ATM Withdrawal Limits

motorheadFat, drunk and stupid is no way to go through life
I saw a blurb that Philip Seymour Hoffman withdrew $1200 from a supermarket ATM the night before he died with a needle in his arm. That surprised me. My bank has a $300 daily limit and my old bank had a $500 limit.
I general I won't use a credit/debit card in a strip club, but if it's a spur of the moment visit I will hit the ATM machine at my local branch. $300 is often too little.
Maybe wealthy celebs have special accounts with higher withdrawal limits but I've never heard of a bank would dispense that much cash at a time.

I have an account at Chase and one with a credit union. My limit with Chase was $500 until just a couple of years ago when I asked them to increase it to $1000 which they did. The credit union, OTOH, had all these security policies and said they couldn't increase it past $500 even though I've moved 100s of thousands through them. The fun thing was the policies with the credit union didn't prevent my card from getting ding'ed for a bunch of fraudulent gasoline cards, and some things they are lightening up on now.
Been have good experiences with Chase the last couple of years - might drop the credit union.

In general banks will give anyone a temporary increase to their limit, for the rare large cash purchase or someone going on vacation.
They'll typically give you a permanent increase if you request it and they think your average daily balance justifies it.
I suspect someone like Hoffman was allowed to withdrawal lots.

I think my bank has a 800 daily limit and I never asked them to increase it.

I have enough at the bank to get free checking but not a whole lot more.

I've never found it necessary to exceed my credit union's $500 daily limit.

I would guess higher limits might be more common in NYC.

Actually I never tried to get maybe more than $300 out at a time. I can't remember. Maybe I'll try $400 just to see if it'll let me.

I'm remember the jestie-girl and txtittyfuck having a hissy fit a couple of years back when I said my withdrawal limit was $500. No way I could have hundreds of thousands to invest if that were true they said.
I see in this thread, though, that we have at least a couple of people with net worth probably at least half-million with withdrawal limits around $500. Yet jestie ain't flipping out. Strange ain't it? Guess her "logic" wasn't that airtight after all. But then again, what else is new? :-)

^^^ fuckin' fuck you, Dugly! I never allow counter-examples discredit things I want to believe. My brain just has a fucked up confirmation bias that way. And I want to believe what I want to believe regardless of what's really true and that's pretty much the end of it. And besides txtittyfuck agreed with me and we got together to jerk each other off afterward. So fuckin' fuck you!

LOL, a year or more later and Dugly is still pissed off enough that he has to trot out an alternate.
As usual Dugly's reading comprehension fails.

Used an ATM at the Bellagio casino in Vegas a few years ago. The preset options started at $500 and went up from there to I think around $5,000. I hit "other amount" to withdraw my measly $200.

I don't have an ATM card. I've never needed one.

^^^^What...I remember the day when we were at Follies and you left your stack of 20's at home on the kitchen counter. Could have used an ATM card that day. I think you were in and out of Follies in less than 60 minutes that day.

Damn Timbo. Your memory is better than mine. LOL. I could have gone home to get it but that is a long drive. Ok once in 72 years I could have used it but it wasn't urgent.

My daily limit is $250. On the few times I've used a ATM in the strip club, $200 seemed to be the most I could get out.

motor,
Bottom line from one that deals daily with ATMs, the limit depends completely on your relationship with the bank and up to the amount in the ATM.

$300 is a bit low these days.
Ranukam, I think most SC ATMs have low withdrawal limits so that you will need to make multiple withdrawals and thus making more $ off fees. They probably figure if youre taking $ at the SC ATM you really aint gonna think twice about that fee.

What supermarket was this? Remember folks, ATMS don't discriminate between rich and poor. Since it's a public atm, he has to pay a fee, but there are generally a limit depending on the area. perhaps it was a fancypants supermarket that generally only serve the high class

It was a D'agostino Supermarket in the West Village near his apartment. It must be an east coast chain. I've never heard of it.

Clubber,
I always assumed the daily limit was a security measure, not related to the person's wealth or account balance.
What if you're robbed at the ATM? If you only have a $500 limit, it prevents the perp from stealing thousands from your account.
And I read one article that ATM machines only dispense a maximum of 40 bills. And since I've only seen 20's from an ATM, then $800 is the max.

Most banks let you set your daily limit at the amount you want.
It's a daily limit i.e. you can get $x out at 11:59pm and another $x out at 12:01am.

motor,
There used to be a time when ATMs were somewhat limited by software and hardware, but these days, that isn't the case. They can do about anything someone can dream up. Wait till you see somethings coming down the pike.

I’m currently w/ Wells Fargo after it bought out Wachovia – my withdrawal limit was set at $500 from the get go by the bank.
I’ve been thinking of trying to increase it to $1000 for those occasions when I am in PL overdrive - there’s been a few times I’ve spent more than $500 SCing in one day/night and ended up using my CC via the ATM (I do have a separate/additional savings account but it’s with an internet bank and I don’t have an ATM card for them – I usually just do free transfers over the internet b/w my internet bank and my brick and mortar bank).

That’s pretty much been the case for me – but there are two Wells Fargo banks near my home and one of them consistently gave me $50 bills especially if withdrew a significant amount like $300.
I hate getting $50s and actually emailed the bank as to why this particular branch’s ATM always gave me $50s – the answer I was given is that certain branches are in very high traffic areas and thus they dispense the higher denominations in order to be able to store enough cash in the machines and not run out – subsequently I stopped using that branch.

Thanks for the info. I think my daily limit is $800 and I think I could get it all at one time. At one time I used to be able to get tens instead of only twenties. 50's would suck. I would really hate to get 50 bucks worth of two dollar bills in strip club change.

I had an account with ING (before they were bought out by Capital One) and the ATM withdrawal limit was $1,000. My current bank (Chase) the limit is $500. I use Chase because they have saturated the Columbus market so there are plenty of ATMs and they gave me a $100 bonus for signing up.

The Casino in Columbus has an ATM that dispensed me $100 bills when I requested a $200 withdrawal.

My bank's limit is $450, which I find weird, but if I ever really needed more cash, I have a couple gas cards I can hit up, although I haven't needed the one in a while and can't readily remember my ATM code for it.

Papi,
Most Wells have one of two setups. $20 and stamps (most of them) or $20 and $50.

I saw there were a few arrests in connection with Hoffman's death.
Makes me wonder if some ghetto stripper in Detroit OD'd on heroin, how hard would the cops work to arrest the dealer.

My limit is $750, but a quick phone call gets it increased for 24 hours if I need it that badly. However, when I am preparing to travel, or know that I have a big night coming, I hit my local bank branch and withdraw a sum of cash directly from the teller. That way I know I have enough AND I still have my entire limit to draw upon in the very unlikely event that I need more.

The NYT reported that the ATM Hoffman used had a $200 limit per withdrawal. And he withdrew that 6x over the course of about an hour.
Which matches my experience of ATMs in grocery stores, bars, etc having relatively low withdrawal limits. Probably more about sticking you with the non-bank fee multiple times than about deterring muggers from forcing you to empty your account at gun/knife point.
I do my banking with one of those too big to fail banks and I live in NYC. The preset withdrawal amounts go up to $1000. Once the withdrawal amount goes north of $200-300 you're almost guaranteed to get some $50 bills.
I've never tested how much I could withdrawal from an ATM in one go, because when I'm getting >$500 I usually want it in specific bills. So I take care of those withdrawals at the teller window.

On the ATM subject...
Some years ago, late evening, I was driving home from Ohio and was going to get a room near my cousins home in N. Florida. I stopped at an ATM in a small town in Georgia. When I asked for a withdrawal, the ATM displayed "Enter amount up to $300 in increments of $1".
Being in the business, I thought that strange till I realized, it might fit the population of this small town. I could see some guy that might have less than $20 in the bank just before payday, but needs that beer or a smoke.
There are two ATMs in Key West on Duval Street that dispense nothing but $50 notes.
The owners of the machines tailor them to their clients. It's as simple as that.

@clubber - neat stuff.
I've never seen an ATM that gives $1 bills.
About 15 years ago, I was with my friend and she stopped by her bank in the Boston area, which was a one branch bank. She pointed out that she could withdraw as little as $5. That's the lowest denomination I've seen, and only once.

Did some research on this recently when the bank did not allow me to take out my limit (1500 with B of A). It seems the limit is 40 bills in whatever denomination, so I was limited to only taking out 800. I really do hate the small denomination atms as carrying around a large stack is either bulky in your pockets or uncomfortable to sit if in your wallet. Definitely do like the atms in Vegas which spit out the 100 bills.
I try to avoid credit card usage at all cost, not because of privacy issues, but I find that a lot of places add a surchage, or worst, there is a lot of pressure to add a tip for the host, cashier, etc. If i'm using cash for vip, I rarely tip the host anything more than a few bucks - I expect the girls to give their tipouts and not take it feom me.

I can take out up to 1K with a daily max of 1500.
