Toronto police made the arrest on Dec. 28, 2012 after an investigation. Tyrone Burton, 28 of Toronto, faces 10 prostitution related charges including two counts each of exercising control, living on the avails of prostitution, trafficking in persons, receiving benefits from trafficking in persons and withholding or destroying documents.

According to police, Burton took advantage of two prostitutes beginning on Dec. 13. He controlled their movements, forced both women to prostitute themselves and kept all their earnings. He is also alleged to have taken possession of their identity documents and withheld them.

On Dec. 22, both women managed to escape from Burton and contacted police.

Although human trafficking is usually thought of as occurring when people are transported across international borders, the offence is much broader than that. It includes any recruitment, transportation or harboring of a person for the purpose of exploitation. The offence involves control of the trafficked person by physical force or threats of force. The exploitation usually involves either forcing trafficked persons to prostitute themselves or forcing the victim to provide other labor for little or no money.

The offences of withholding or destroying documents and receiving material benefits are relatively new offences in Canada. They were enacted in 2005 to help combat human trafficking.

Burton appeared in court on Dec. 28. Police believe there may be more victims and ask anyone with information to contact them or Crime Stoppers.
