Health tips

Didn't know if anyone heard this before or not. I got a free book as part of something I was previously subscribed to. It's called Bottom Line's Health Breakthroughs 2009.

Anyway here's a tip to clean up your arteries and decrease plague and improving blood flow can make your strip club trip much better if you know what I mean.
Drink pomegranate juice. Choose no sugar added and if you get pure juice, dilute two to four ounces with equal amount of water. Drink it with meals to slow absorption of sugar to maintain stable blood glucose. Use twice a day. The book claims Israeli researchers did a 3 year study on 65 to 75 year old men and women with severe artery blockage. They found those that drank 50ml per day had plague thickness decreased by an average of 13% after 3 months and 35% after one year. Placebo drinkers had a 9% increase in plague. Apparently there are antioxidants called polyphenols in the juice which prevent chloresterol oxidation and improve blood flow. Anyone ever heard of this before? I hadn't but I bought some at Walmart with no sugar added in the blueberry version. It does have some extra juices. It tastes good so I'm drinking it now. Was wondering if anybody else ever heard of it? Looks like I have a good book. Didn't even cost me anything. It has a lot of information.

I don't remember where but I read plague can start building up in your arteries when you're a teenager. The book also lists some other things to either help prevent plague from building up in your arteries or to reduce it. I'm not a doctor so please consult with a doctor before trying anything I suggest. They suggest throwing out any vitamin E supplement that contains alpha-tocopherol or listed as "dl-alphatocopherol". They say it leaves less room for more helpful form of vitamin E or natural form called or labeled "d-alpha-tocopherol". They suggest a tocotrienol only supplement in 300 mg per day dosage. They list a group at www.allergyresearchgroup.com but I haven't checked this out.

They also list vitamin K. However they warn that if you use blood thinners to consult under the supervision of a doctor closely before taking it or while taking it. I think this is in leafy green vegetables which I don't eat too much of. They suggest 150 mcg to 200 mcg daily for all adults.

Then they say aged garlic extract AGE or those taking 4 milliliters a day for one year had a 66% reduction in new plague formation compared to those taking a placebo. LDL reduced by 12 percent and total chloesterol by up to 31%, triglycerides by up to 19%. Oh, at the end they say the dosage is 4ml to 6ml of liquid AGE or 400 mg to 600 mg in tablet or capsule form. Then if you need more they recommend statin drugs if you're not better after 12 months and your doctor thinks you need more treatment.

Disclaimer: You are responsible for your own health care and you should not treat anything I have posted as any medical advise. I did read AGE or the garlic extract can thin the blood as well so people taking other medication or going in for surgery should take or not take depending upon what their doctor says.

I decided to post this since at least half the population will die from blocked arteries if they die naturally.

While there are helpful dietary supplements, the real Holy Grail of health is just plain exercise - Americans in particular don't get anywhere near enough.

Daily aerobic exercise (at least 20 minutes) with strength training 3 times a week (muscle is more metabolically efficient than fat) is the starting place.

My daily regimen is running 2 miles and biking 5 miles a day (plus I bike whenever I can to commute), hitting the gym for an hour or so of weights about 3 days a week, and going hiking about every other weekend. I've been meaning to take up boxing - there's a boxing gym near my house - because it's an awesome workout. I used to practice Tae Kwon Do about an hour a day when I was younger (like 10 years ago) and it was a pretty amazing workout... though I used to spar with a Marine who just kicked my ass around the mat ;)

I'm 42 now, and in better shape than most guys I know who are half my age, just by staying active daily; videogames in particular are going to kill the current young generation just by breeding couch potatoes.

As far as diet, I am way too much of a foodie to "diet", but I eat healthy things and eat and drink in moderation. I do like a nice single-malt after dinner lately - that's my vice.

So far, so good, though.

Good info on the dietary considerations, but ozymandias has obviously highlighted the key. Balance of good consumption practices and activity levels can only help our health. May all of you fine TUSCLers enjoy good health and longevity!

I need to start exercising more regularly again. New Years resolution? Maybe make a resolution to go to sleep earlier when I need to get up in the morning too. I just don't get sleepy like I used to. I wouldn't be surprised if the rise in diabetes in the US was due to lack of sleep and lack of exercise. Eventually half the people in the US do die of cardiac arrest I beleive I read. Clogged arteries. If it was just a simple pill we could take to unclog the arteries and no one ever had a heart attack again, billions of dollars would be lost in the medical industry. Obviously the customers would be happier. Maybe when everyone reaches the age they think they've lived long enough, stop exercising, eat crisco and all the bad food, and sit around the house and wait for the grim reaper to arrive. I think some people actually do this. Maybe not on purpose but I'm not sure.

Atherosclerosis is the disease. Plaque build-up on the artery walls is the symptom. There are several aggravating factors including heredity, fatty diet, lack of exercise and not enough pussy. I got up close and personal with this whole thing four years ago when I had 5-bypass heart surgery. I didn't have a heart attack, just angina pain in my shoulders for about a week. Doctor believes my problem was hereditary more than lifestyle.

I take baby asprin which acts as a blood thinner and a statin drug to reduce bad cholesterol(LDL)and increase good cholesterol (HDL) levels . I see my cardiologist annually, and I am also seeing a lipid (blood) specialist at a major research hospital nearby. He is a big advocate of fish oil in addition to exercise and diet, and has recently upped my recommended daily intake to 6 horse pill sized fish oil capsules. I think the scientific equivalent would be like 3500mg. We'll let you know how that works out. Anyway, my cholesterol has been consistently within range for a couple of years now, but triglycerides seem to bounce around a bit more. (The fish oil helps that too)

I've also been doing about 25mg of the Blue Pill before visiting the club. But I'm finding out that when The Big Boy is exploring the oral cavity of a 19yo girl with small perky breasts, he does just fine without the V pill. Sorry if it tastes like fish, baby!

I've tried the pomegranate juice, and didn't care for the taste. But I have seen the mix that contains blueberry juice, so maybe that makes it better - I'll give it a try. I still like cranberry juice the best tho.
