Well let me just cancel my interviews with the nannies my colleagues, neighbors, and friends recommended who have decades of experience and glowing recommendations from people I respect; you completed a "childcare course" once, so you are the one I trust to spend extended periods of time with my young children!

My VP wondered why I didn't look to hire people with technical certifications. Anyone can go through the motions to get certified or get a college degree. However, can they actually do the work? The engineering team I built was small, 8-10, and skilled with experience or what I call "Intellectual Capital" that takes time to acquire.
I have dual BS degrees in Marketing and Management Data Systems, and trust me I'd make a lousy marketing hire. I realized 7 semesters into marketing that I liked the computer simulations. So, I added MDS, went back after graduating did CompSci undergrad classes then grad engineering classes.
