He was only 65. He was incredibly talented, and I don't remember him being involved in much controversy. His portrayal of Doc Holiday is by far one of my favorite performances in a western.

^ I watched tombstone last night. As a fan of old westerns, it is unusual for me to say, but his Doc Holliday portrayal was the best of all time.

Ice was a better pilot than Maverick. Hands down.

I'm a fan of old westerns too. TUBI is free and has a lot of them and the commercials are not excessive.

He was great (although a somewhat small part) in “Heat” with Robert Di Niro and Al Pacino.

That’s the movie that comes to mind for me after Top Gun.

He was also Jim Morrison in "The Doors". I don't know that he was controversial, but he was supposedly one of the most difficult to work with actors ever.

Val Kilmer was difficult while doing "Island of Dr. Moreau" as was his costar Marlon Brando. That movie was a big flop on its release. There was a better classic version in 1932. Usually it is better not to try to remake classic movies because you can't top them, as seen recently with the new Snow White movie as compared with the original.
