I‘ve been there on work trips. Sketchy as hell. Carjacking is so common that delivery trucks there have doors that can only be unlocked remotely, through some cell service. This way, the drivers can’t open the doors and hand the truck over to hijackers.

Rio is manageable as long as you stay in the safer areas, and limit walking about at night. Copacabana beach was great and safe. The view from the Christ the Redeemer statue is incredible, but you need to go on a sunny day.
I found Casablanca to be the best club in Rio with the highest quality. Small club, about 40-50 girls on a busy night, all dressed classy but sexy. There is a pole for dancing but I only saw it used once. Entry fee 100, takeout fee 200 and girls would leave for 600 (all $ BRL). All told it was about $200 US for an hour in the club with drinks and a couple hours back at my hotel room. I pulled several. This was a couple years ago.
